mahdoum I'm not installing it yet, but I just remembered I read somewhere that Ubuntu does not recoginize the ntfs file system... Is that correct? If so I have to reformat my hard disk to FAT32.... Any other tips or problems I might run into?
samer Ubuntu reads and writes on NTFS partitions thanks to ntfs-3g. it works fine for me but you may get into trouble if you hibernate windows and then try to access its partition from Ubuntu. read more: www.ntfs-3g.org
rolf I confirm what samer said :) By default it will detect and read from your ntfs partitions, and if you want write access to ntfs you have to install ntfs-3g (just a couple of clicks). Of course the Ubuntu OS itself runs on a ext3 filesystem if i'm not mistaken. You will have to partition your hard drive.
mahdoum ok Installed Ubuntu and now I've got a few questions.... Since I installed Ubuntu and not Kubuntu is it fine to install KDE? and if so which distro the Kubuntu? Secondly what are the software alternatives for windows live messenger and a good mp3 player? I found Amarok... Any other tips are welcome [edit] How do I change the bootup so that it loads XP by default and not ubuntu? [/edit]
battikh 1-you can install KDE, there should not be any problem. KUbuntu is just like Ubuntu but you get KDE besides Gnome. that's the only major difference. 2-for windows live u can use amsn, pidgin or kopete 3-to change the boot sequence, play with /boot/grub/menu.list
mahdoum Ok I really know nothing about linux doh! What does the below command do exactly? Just get files from the net for kubuntu desktop and install? sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop (How can I tell the size?)
rolf to install kde, open synaptic package manager and install "kubuntu-desktop" (use the search function) voila
samer when you execute the command to install k-ubuntu (either from command line or from synaptic) they'll tell you the size of the packages you're DLing
