  • Owning a dog in Lebanon

My wife and I are thinking of getting a dog. We love dogs but never had one.
We both have full time jobs and know the commitment needed in owning a dog.
The problem is that pets are not allowed in the apartment we live in.
Is there a place where i can keep my dog and visit every day to play/walk/train, before/after work or during weekends/holidays?

I googled for such places, and all i found is very expensive dog hotels. I am more looking for a place like BETA, where they keep all dogs securely in a big land in baabda.
Dog is such pet, that should stay near owners. It is not like a horse, these animals very attached to people.
In worst case they can be guard dog, but their life usually miserable, and still they interact with their humans several times per day.
Also if you have no experience, better to take care about some animal in BETA, become his patron, learn how they behave.
If dog will grow not like you want (and its very possible - as you cannot give him enough attention and love), what you will do? many people abandon pets... and thats terrible.
I cannot stress this enough.
If you don't have time for your pet, taking care of him, giving him attention, cleaning after them, having patience to deal with them sometimes especially with puppies.
Do not get a dog.

And in your case, boarding your dog everyday in a facility or with someone, is a big no no.
Your relationship with the dog will be weak, and you will end up abandoning it.

All of the above mentioned apply most to big breed dogs, especially the troublemaking part.

What you can do, is get a small breed, like a loulou, or pomeranian, pug, chihuahua, corgi etc.. and keep it in the house.
Make sure the first thing you do, is to potty train them.
Even when you're not in the house to take them down to potty, train them to do it in a specific area in the balcony.
That's what I did with my German shepherd as I did not have the time to take her down all the time to potty, so she just went out in her spot in the balcony and do her thing. My job would be cleaning after her when I come home.

I bet the small dogs do not need that much looking after i.e. they cannot make as huge messes as the big ones.
So try adopting a small breed puppy or dog.

---Edit----
I forgot about the part where pets are not allowed in your apartment.
If your question is that if it's ok to get a dog, and keep it boarding in some place just so that you'd visit them at night after work daily, then the answer is NO.
But if you can sneak a small dog in your apartment, that would work, just try what I mentioned above.
Hi Sero,
If you'd like to care for a dog for the sole reason that you like dogs, then you can volunteer at BETA, you can donate food there and care for ALL those dogs.

It will be very difficult to care for a dog if it's not in your home, what seems like a short trip back and forth will become tiresome, I've seen it. You'll end up paying boarding fees and then eventually putting the dog up for sale.
I am having a bit of trouble comprehending. For me a pet stays at home and you enjoy their company around when you are home.

In your scenario, you are taking care of a dog but I don't know if the concept of ownership applies.

Maybe you can care for someone else's dogs, walk, train, etc them. Many persons have dogs but are short on time or motivation. There is actually a job for this - it's called dog walker.

Anyway, sorry I got carried away. I do not know such place where your dog can live away from you. Usually places are designed around temporary stays - where you can put your pets for a few days or weeks while you go on vacation.

Maybe BETA will be happy for you to pick a dog from theirs, and take care of him and train him, and maybe take him home if your situation changes. However you have to see whether they are willing to "reserve" the dog and not give him away for adoption to someone else (unless you are OK with it).

I want to commend you for considering the various aspects of pets beforehand and considering the level of commitment which is needed.
You don't have to "own" a dog. As an alternative, BETA lets you sponsor one of their rescued dogs until they're adopted. Sounds like a more sensible option for you.
Based on what you said, and this is with all due respect, DO NOT OWN A DOG

There are animal shelter who do full days for people to come and visit / play with the dogs and help out (i highly recommend this to anyone for a multitude of reasons).

More so, the money you have in mind spending on the boarding, the vets, the extra stuff etc. could go to many dogs in said shelter if you really want to make a dog's life better and actually both your wife and yourself love dogs

Here's a link to one of the shelters that was struggling not too long ago but are hanging around.

These guys do shelter days every now and then.
Thanks for your comments
As you suggested, we have decided not to get a dog but to sponsor one from BETA instead

Hopefully this will be a suitable option for you.

Wishing you the best! I would be happy to hear news on the topic.
