Hey guys, a friend of mine busted her external, she took it a store they said its not fixable, as in its not being read by the Pc. They recommended to take it to someone to take it apart and try to get the info off of it, anyone know a place like that?
Just wanted to add that if he is under warranty which almost all brands have then he is entitled to a free recovery. If not my adivse to your friend is to try to fix the hard disk as it is most likely to be a problem with power delivery assuming it is not fall damage and the disk and actuator are still intact it would be much cost effective
Search the forums for hard disk recovery, you will find like 12 threads.
But yeah basically you need to find a specialist, it is a hardware repair job.
It is the first time I ever hear about "free recovery".

That is not true at all. Warranty covers hardware only. Data recovery is an intensive and time consuming process.

Some 'almost unfixable' hdds read out but just slowly. You can try running ddrescue over an enclosure, if for example, the disk spins, you can see partitions..
I recovered 80% of my data using DDrescue. although it took me 5-7 days of reading and getting things together.
If you want PM I can guide you through it.

2 cases:

1- The disk is detectable through bios and no visible physical defect is present nor clicking sounds:
Chances are you may be able to recover it, I can help if you want.

2- The disk is not detectable through bios, but no clicking sound:
You may attempt to swap the board of the disk with a similar one if you can find it and test.

3- The disk is producing clicking or other sounds which show a failing head or damaged platters:
I wouldn't expect to salvage the data nor fix the disk

Regards.
