Hey guys. I wanted to ask about the standard procedure of cashing in a a check at the bank. Things to note are that I do not have a bank account yet, I have not cashed in a check before, and the amount being cashed in may be a lot(? four digits). So if you could please provide your input on if I can cash in such a check.

I don't think it matters if you have a bank account when you want to cash in a check that you have received (from someone who has a bank account).
But you just need your ID, Real ID (I tried to take a protected copy of my ID and they didn't accept it), and that's it.
You may have to wait a while until the bank communicate with the proper department (usually the branch of the bank where the bank account of the provider of your check is) to confirm the validity of the check (I guess) and when approved you'll be paid.

It may take a few weeks, but easiest way is to go to the bank where the check was issued and that should be quicker. there if it convenient. If the check was issued overseas, then I haven't a clue, especially without a bank here.

Okay thanks guys! So I'll be needing my ID and it might take some time, which I don't mind.

If the check is 'Barré', you need a bank account yourself (since you can't get the money in cash), money needs to be deposited in your account.
If the check is not 'Barré', the easiest way is to go to the bank that issued the check, you can get your money on the spot.
Good luck.
