tiny fx wroteI have owned an asus27aq(4k ips 10bit) and a pg278qr(1440p 165hz tn 8bit/simulated 10bit).
My honest opinion is that while they are both sharp, after owning a 4k monitor, there is a difference when using the 1440p one.On the other hand the 1440p monitor has a much better refresh rate. But while we can argue on the merits of higher resolution vs higher refresh rate, color wise, you have nothing to worry about. A good tn panel will perform very well if you are seated directly facing it. Color reproduction should not be a major concern if the quality of the panel is good.
Well I ended up buying a TN 144HZ 1440p (one that was posted in sell your stuff thread). And I regret nothing!
The colors are great even in comparison to my old IPS. Although not the best colors out there, I don't think I will see a difference, since I have 144 fps to look at!
Gaming on 144hz is just out of this world. It's like a cure to your eyes... even just scrolling through an article is very satisfying. Like when I adjusted the OS and screen settings, I was in shock. Even my brother sitting next to me was like "wow the mouse movement suddenly looks so lifelike".. it is that good
I could've gone for a G-Sync panel to match the performance of a 1080ti, but tbh, I don't think it's worth it, even though a lot here would argue for a day long about this (I know you're reading this). I also see no major stuttering/tearing in games where that matters most like CSGO and PUBG. More so, I don't think I would ever buy a G-Sync simply not to support Nvidia's plan to not allow FreeSync* in their drivers.
At the end of the day, I think this was a solid buy for 350$. And I'm very happy about the result. The last time I was so satisfied was when I got the 750Ti 4 years ago ... good bang for buck always gives a good feeling.
Thanks for the help guys!
*FreeSync is an open source of adaptive Sync that depends on the driver more than the hardware. Nvidia just never wants to implement it in their drivers, so they would push us to buy G-Sync for 300$ more.
