I was checking this web page yesterday:
http://wccftech.com/intel-coffee-lake-8th-gen-core-i7-8700k-performance-specs-leak/
From the looks of it, the flagship (i7) of the upcoming Intel 8th generation Coffee Lake will have a max of 6 physical cores and 6 logical cores. Even the new i3 and i5 will have more cores and a larger L3 cache than equivalent current generation Intel cpus.
This brings me to the question: How relevant will the Skylake/Kaby Lake i5 and i7 be for gaming ?
It's so funny how, 1 year ago when I was checking reviews and opinions online as I was getting ready to upgrade my 8 year old dual core, everyone was saying i5 (4c/4t) were more than enough for gaming and that i7 (4c/8t) cpus were still overkill.
Today, everyone seems to agree 4 core cpus are reaching the end of the road and that 6 core processors are more or less a must.
Personally, I bought an i7-6700 (Skylake) back in Dec. 2016 but my brother just upgraded his extremely old machine and opted for an i5-7600 (Kaby Lake) just a month ago.
It also seems that, eventhough Coffee Lake will have a LGA 1151 socket, it will be called (LGA 1151 v.2) and won't work on the z170 and z270 chipsets. That means getting a new motherboard if you want to upgrade.
I have a feeling everyone who bought a quad core cpu got recently screwed by Intel and AMD.
