  • Low carb eating in Lebanon

I'm currently on a low carb diet not by choice but due to health issue my doctor recommended that. I usually love junk food and i would like to know what i can make or a place where i can eat low carb food.
Ps:if anyone knows a place that makes burgers in lettuce instead of bread buns that would be the best
Classic Burger Joint had it if I recall correctly.
Try to cook your own food; only then you'll be sure what you're exactly eating. You need to eat low fat meat otherwise there is no point of dieting.
For breakfast, eggs is your best friend (eat with no bread). For lunch, a green salad with low fat dressing is fine. Personally I don't have a proper lunch; instead I have an apple every 2 hours till I leave work. I have a cup of coffee then hit the gym (sometimes I have some dates if i need the extra energy). Post workout I take some whey protein for better recovery and muscle growth. Dinner constitutes of salads, steamed veggies, and grilled fish/chicken/meat.

Best fish is Tuna or Salmon. Get it fresh, season it with some salt and pepper, then off to the grill. (might add some lemon and some herbs with the Tuna to avoid drying the meat)

Best Chicken meat is the Chicken breast or Turkey breast. Season it to your liking (I usually put lemon zest, lemon juice, white pepper, oregano, olive oil, salt) or some ready made mix, then off to the grill.

Best Meat is anything low fat. Avoid Ribeye and Serloin steaks as they have high concentration of fat. Get Rump (cheap) or Tenderloin (expensive). Season with salt and pepper and little olive oil, then off to the grill.

Salads are pretty basic. Lots of green leaves can do the job. Lettuce, Rocka, Spinache, Cabbage is all good for you.

Veggies should be easy to prepare as well. Put some green beans, zucchini, carrots (care for quantity), sweet potato (care for quantity), mushrooms (care for quantity) in a microwavable Tupperware. Season with salt, pepper, oregano, garlic, olive oil. Throw in microwave at high heat for 10 minutes. Enjoy steamed veggies yum!

You can also have some sauteed spinache. Olive oil, onion, garlic, fresh spinache leaves, salt. Saute till spinache is dull.

Keep counting calories as burning more calories than what you consume will make you lose weight.

Remember, sugar got you into this mess. You need to cut it off completely. This means no junk food, no processed food, no sweets, no sodas. Drink water till your piss has no color; 8L per day.

Good luck.
making your own food would be your best bet and it is not as hard as you might think. common meals when i'm on low carb and fat diet :
1) steak + salad ( just pan fry the steak roughly 5 min on each side on medium heat)
2) chicken breast + salad ( cutting into small cubes before pan fry)
3) vegetable stew with your protein of choice, i prefer it with curry powder spices and maybe maggi broth cube , i might have rice on the side with moderate quantity
4) eating lebanese foods, mainly what some of us refer to as farmers food: bean stew, orcas, loubye( forgot the english word for it), spinach, grean pease, mloukhiya... with moderste rice quanity on the side are really healthy choices for you and oir cuisine id rich in it so it it time to get back to the roots.

good luck
Low carb in Lebanon is almost heresy, but there are things out there which you can find readily which should help. First and foremost, 'mishawey' like kebab, shish taouk, kafta etc--those you can find at any corner. You may want to order a 200g portion and eat it with hummus or a salad. With low carb, you don't worry too much about the fat---you worry about carbs, so don't worry too much about fat content (probably preferable to not eat the chunks of fat though). Fat helps your body say that it is full. With salads, just avoid a lot of root vegetables and use a basic olive oil/lemon salad dressing--DO NOT use commercial salad dressings. They are loaded with sugars and other carbs. Eggs are your friend---eat them any way you want, poached, fried, boiled, etc as they are very versatile. Most cheese is permitted also. A 200 gram chunk of halloumi has about 3 grams of carbs. As for what you can't eat aside from bread, sweets, etc, most fruit is off of the list. You can eat berries and melons for the most part and about everything else, you have to watch the portion size and pretty much avoid grapes and bananas. Watch for hidden carbs like in milk (12g per 200ml), peanut butter, ketchup, mayo, and just about any fat free dressing.

There are some low carb breads out there if you feel like making a sandwich out there--1 is from Moulin d'Or and another is from Wooden Bakery (high protein bread I believe). You can eat them in moderation and so you wont feel like a leper here. ) Here are some helpful links.

Hummus is love, hummus is life

I can also recommend making some random herb salad. Thyme leaves, rocca, basil, 'mo5 b3ebbo', green onions, mint, parsley.. Great with some olive and lemon, just pick the leaves and mix.

Note: I'd avoid too much parsley as it messed up my intestines. Still my favorite.

Your kitchen!

Buy some chicken breasts (for example), make them to your taste (go creative with the spices - I enjoy it personally). If you work, you can prepare them the night before. It's also really cool to marinate them before cooking them. If you learn to do it right (which is really not hard) you will have something that tastes better then in restaurants, and you can taste foods that are hard to find in Lebanon, due to the poor choice of cuisines.

Example:

The only downside is that it takes time!

Have that with a huge bowl of salad, of course - creatively handpicked fresh ingredients.

Regarding your second question, I am sure that any place will be happy to serve a burger in lettuce, if they have any, which I think they have. Otherwise just throw the buns away and eat your burger with salad. The problem is whether the meat is good... go to places that grill, and with high quality meat. Hopefully they won't put sugar in your patty!

Avoid BK and especially McDo, they put sugar in everything, and it's all defrosted and dry. I find that it is not very enjoyable as food (not as experience), and I am still hungry after eating their biggest menu.

Paying attention to what you eat, being selective, shopping and cooking your own food is good for your health.

I lost 20 kilos like this - making my own food (mainly salad and some lean meat). I still cook my own food most of the times. I try to have a healthy diet but I eat whatever I want, and have not gained my weight back.

My other advice (knowing how it is in Beirut) is: walk a little every day. You would think it's nothing but it makes HUGE difference to just walk 1/2 hour every day - and try to get some sun too.

And finally if you fail your diet for one or two days and binge - just go back into your diet after that. Skip the negativity.

Good luck!
it's not about the food quality, it's more about your calorific intake, I made 6 pack abs while eating 3-4 times a week out. You just have to adjust your meals to complete your dairy calorific needs.

For me it is too much hassle to count calories in everything that I eat. A simpler solution worked.

Also, if I have 1000 calories of cake or ice cream, it is mostly refined sugars which will be digested quickly, so I will be very hungry again 1/2 hour later, which makes it much harder to hold out until the next meal and follow a diet.

On the other hand high quality food which is more adapted to what I need and want at that moment makes it much easier and enjoyable to follow a diet and hold out until the next meal.

So maybe this works for you but I don't think it would work for me. I consider food quality crucial.

Calories are part of it, but the type calories is just as important. For example, a 150g portion of chicken breast has around 250 calories and 45 grams of protein, 5 grams of fat and virtually no carbs, while a slice of chocolate cake is around 250 calories with around 35 grams of carbs, 10 grams of fat and a minimal amount of protein. Which one is more likely to help you lose weight and which one is more likely to help you feel more full?

You can be on a 2000 calorie diet on cake or chicken breast, but you are more likely to feel fuller and maintain it better on a diet higher in proteins and (good) fats rather than high in carbs which actually cause blood sugars to spike and make you hungry quicker and for longer periods. Those sugar rushes that people talk about also have crashes. It is in those crashes that people tend to cheat and overeat.

Anyhow, gl. Everybody's body is different. Just figure out what foods work for you and you should be able to design something that suits you. You just need a place to start.
I would recommend focusing on food rich with protein and fiber. Red meat, chicken, fish, spinach, vegetables in general. I myself lift and having a nutritious/low carb diet is important. If having fish is a hassle to you, two cans of Tuna/week is good, however nothing can beat having fresh fish. It is good to have some fruits in your diet even though fruits have carbs, especially apples and bananas, 1x/day is totally fine. Opt for brown bread/sugar instead of white, oat bread is very good as well.

The number one food to stay away from, especially in Lebanon, is Manakeesh, it is worse than chocolate, worse than everything else. I like them a lot, but can't eat much.

If your plan is to reduce weight and burn fat, I highly recommend having one teaspoon of Cinnamon everyday. A good method is to add it to a low fat cup of milk.
Thank you guys i appreciate the help any good recommendations for restaurants? Because i cant prepare my food all of the time i need to eat on th go
diet centers
and subway if you go for grilled chicken and sweet onion or vinegar dressing, without cheese, only 6 inch per meal, is a good choice every once in a while.

Have you tried to prepare your food at home?

Not hard, just need to change your approach a bit. For example, if you go to a place like Kababji or anything similiar, opt for a platter, not a sandwich, and try to eat a salad, tabbouleh or another side dish to make it feel like a meal. If you go the fast food route, order a burger, chicken sandwich or whatever (no mayo and get ketchup on side) and remove the bun and just eat what is in the sandwich. Obviously this choice is for you if you are eating in or taking it home--in a car, may be a bit messy. You also have other choices like bftake, shawerma (again, platter not sandwhich), and you can find rotisserie chicken about everywhere too.

And you can check out supermarkets or other places that prepare fish. They may give you an option of cooking the fish which will save you the hassle. mess and smell at home.

Honestly anything I order from Kababji doesn't feel like a meal. Portion is so little you'll have to order at least 70000 worth of food to feel full. But that's another subject.
Silentcontrol wrotethank you all
You are welcome!
I do not know of any places like what you specified so I can't help you with that specific question.
But like others said, if you only want a low carb diet, all you need to do is order meat and salad, and skip the fries, milkshake, pasta...
Good luck!

By the way I was also fat about 6 years ago. Over 100kg and I am also almost 1.9m.
Now I am less then 80.
I think I lost my weight in less than 2 months.
