Dear Geeks,
I rock a budget 6100 - gtx1060 build.
Plz spare me the bottleneck talk, it's not that severe. Most games use my gpu at 99% constantly.
I need some info regarding overclocking my cpu.
I'm upgrading my build piece by piece until I have enough parts to have two builds at the same time.
Meanwhile due to budget reasons I need to be using my 6100 for some time before being able to upgrade.

Questions:
Can I baseclock overclock on a z270 board?
Do I need to adjust the clockrate of my ram? If yes, is it doable on my Kingston 8GB DDR4 2133MHz?

I know it's better to spend the money on a better CPU, but I'm going to get a cooler and newer board for my ultimate build, so why not push this i3 to its limits.

Thanks
Hey man,

An i3 6100 is totally fine with 1060. I had it on a 980ti, and my friend have it on a 1070. The FPS loss are not earth shattering (on high res).

With that out of the way, you can up the Bclk on any locked chip. But your mileage will vary, depends on chip/board/ram. I had it on Asus Impact VIII (Z170). And i was able to bump it to 120 something, cant remember. So 120x37= 4.4ghz, mind you i had a 3000 mhz ram. But if your on a z170, I flashed a non-official bios and unlocked multiplayer oc and had the i3 @ 4.7ghz (iirc). but there where drawbacks to this unofficial bios, as the bios is and will always be a beta bios.

Also your ram is good enough, you might be held back by it, but you can always up the timings and up the volts, but faster speed ram, really benefit an i3 oc. Like REALLY benefit.

So its doable, and it will hold you enough till you get something faster, but if your going to oc the i3, upgrading to an i5 wont have much performance extra, so maybe save for an i7? Ofcourse you can oc the i5 too :P
Thank you for your detailed reply, but my 2 main questions are still not answered clearly.
I know there exists z170 beta bioses that allow users to overclock their non-k cpus but does the newer z270 still have this ability?
I currently have an h110 and I'm going to make the leap for the z270 once for all.
Secondly, I have no idea what is the relation between the ram frequency and the baseclock overclock so if you can shed some more light on it that would be extremely helpful.
For example: am I obliged to overclock my ram for my cpu overclock to work? If yes, can I do it on my 2133mhz ram?
Thanks again
Sorry i wasnt clear enough, you can oc (baseclock)with z270 and z170. You can flash beta bios to fully unlock the cpu ONLY on z170.
Z270 boards already have their first bioses with microcode to lock the cpu (non-K).

Second, since your overclocking the baseclock, your memory frequency will change since its at default runs with the 100mhz baseclock X memory multiplier.
You can either lower the multiplier or select lower/higher frequencies (depends on the motherboard, some allow multiplier change, and some just give you different frequencies).

So you lower your ram speed (lower than 2133, if needed) to check your highest cpu frequency. Then simply select the ram speeds you like.

You will not see 2133 mhz (as a number) once you overclock. You will see a few mhz below and a few mhz above. So yea it is doable on your ram no problem.

When your done with cpu freq, try getting the highest attainable ram speed in order to gain performance more.

The only worst case scenario, is that you might hit a cpu frequency that is high, but the only selectable frequencies are either way too low or way to high for your rams to handle.
Thank you man, that was very detailed and helpful.
