Well I applied with IDM for a new dsl subscription. I was hoping that it would be with no hassle. but it wasn't . the main issue is that I live far from the PBX ( central) . and my line would reach only 2 mbps. They want to force me to accept it as 1 mbps connection. Meaning that I will pay for 2 mbps and get 1 mbps. For some ppl it is normal and some others like me it is not.
Why they want to limit my connection to 1mbps? Why not leaving it to my modem to sync and decide the best speed that suites my current line?
My first guess is that they want to rob me, what about you ? what do you think?
PS: I have another dsl connection in the same apartment that reaches 1.8 ( my friend from this isp told me that it can reach 3 mbps but I didn't bother myself working on it since my plan is only 1.5 mbps unlimited)

I had your same issue, with IDM, I was kept at 1mbps and was charging 2mbps because there is no 1mbps plans anymore, they said my line can't handle it, but one day, I bought a new modem, TP Link, and I requested them to do a speed test on my line (for the third time), after 2 months they replied that my line can handle 4mbps! They fixed it back to 2mbps and later I requested plan change and now I'm at 4mbps, first month using it, feels like a bless, but as usual from around 7pm to 11pm the internet suffers from serious issues

Good for you. What's the modem model?
And back to my question. Why they are forcing it to 1 mbps ? They can leave it 2mbps even if my modem handshakes with less speed.

I got this modem from pcandparts
TPLink TD-W8961ND 300Mbps Wireless N ADSL2+ Modem Router Link $33.00
The first thing you need to check is your SNR and Line Attenuation, having the model closest the the first entry of the phone line is important, having filters on all the phones/fax and reducing their numbers is crucial for the signal quality.
When I had the modem that comes from IDM (Technicolor cheap model) the SNR (Signal over Noise Ratio) was around 20dB at 1mbps, this number will almost be decreased in half at 2mbps, after replacing the modem it started to hover between 32dB to 40dB, it could be the cheap modem or the cheap filter that comes with it, at 2mbps the SNR value was around 24dB, and at 4mbps it could drop to 8GB, but usually hovers around 12dB, thats why they can't give you 2mbps if at 1mbps you have a low signal, you simply will loose the connection at 6dB or below

Thanks for the info i am already aware about these layer 2 stats. Let me make my question much clearer .why do idm force the dsl speed to 1 instead they can leave it 2 and if the modern can't reach it will automatically lower its speed.

ADSL do not work like this, if the line can't handle more than 1mbps it will loose the connection if it was set at 2mbps, the line speed is a fixed configuration, it is not something that pulls as much as it could, you can see that in the modem interface, broadband connection details

Let me correct you. It does.

IDM gave me 1 Mbps with with 5 SNR down
Sodetel are giving me (same appartment) 1.5mbps 12 snr
going to cancel idm and move my other line to sodetel also.
IDM has ogero as DSP.
Sodetel has its own DSP.
Silentcontrol
idm has their own dsp called GDS try asking them to put your line on it it will require re activation ... but ssince you have sodetel and want to stop the line anyway give it a try

GDS are very good. Correct me if I'm wrong, they are dsp for wireless( microwaves ...) connections not dsl. IDM are using ogero;s dslam,
Silentcontrol
Idm are using GDS for sure i know that because i am on GDS

I see. looks like it depends on the area. I'm definitely sure in my case they are relying on Ogero.
MrClass
GDS is ultra shit. Ask any network engineer in Lebanon; they will agree with me. Most downtimes ever when we had a local loop with them. Slightest rains will affect the connection.
Cable1 and Pesco had much better uptime and service. Even before the issues happen they just call us to warn us about possible downtime. Though is more expensive
elserge82
I was an network admin. What you are saying is half true. GDS had some fading issues that is true. I shifted from cable1 to gds and things were much better regarding down times. On the other hand, Pesco was my redundant link things were ok I never had any complaint. I don't remember if GDS bought pesco or not.
nuclearcat
No, they are not. Pesco in fast one of best DSP in Lebanon.

Confirmed
With the ongoing process, IDM sent me an engineer in order to troubleshoot my LOW SNR. if the problem was from my side I would have had to pay him. But it looks Ogero was their bottleneck. Leaving no choice but switch back to sodetel. (better dsp)
rolf
Do not accept to pay for a 2mbps line and get a 1mpbs line. **** em.
Ask for a fair price. If they don't have a 1mpbs pricing then they should come up with one (hint: 2mbps/2).
elserge82
You are right but I'm definitely sure they will tell me that I will need to change my payment method (pay threw bank). something that i'm not willing to do:).
