  • Looking for a math tutor

Hey folks.

Hope you're all doing well.

TLDR: Looking for math tutor for courses given in english.

Details:
My medium-term goal is to build a strong foundation in math and have a solid understanding of some "advanced" concepts. I was advised to work my way up to the level of a Terminale S student studying for the French OR Lebanese Baccalaureate.

I have 6 to 8 months to do just that. Worth mentioning that I'm 29 years old and no one is forcing me into this. I'm happy to do it.

Several teachers were referred to me by some of my friends, but they were either A) fully booked or B) way too expensive for me, or C) not suitable for me.

I'm looking for a relaxed and knowledgeable tutor who likes to teach and loves math. Teacher should be very familiar with any part of the curriculum and be able to explain them in-depth.

If you know anyone like that, please let me know, I've been looking for a while now.

Thanks a bunch.

Note: I started relearning math a couple of months ago on Khan Academy. While it's been going really well and the platform is awesome, I think private classes would be very beneficial with the right person.

Edit: updates to post.
I don't know about math tutors, but I just wanted to say something. I read your post earlier that you wanted to go into computer science but the idea intimidated you because you think it's too late. And now you are mentioning that your 29 like it's something bad. I just wanted to say that my father graduated at 32-33 and he has had a very very successful career, far better than most. DO NOT FEEL like you are too old because you are not even close to being too old.most people who do an M.B.A in the usa end up switching careers after it, and the average age in an mba program is 29-30. many people switch major in their late 20s its perfectly fine.

Thank you :)
I wish i had some spare time!
I'm curious, what's your current math level, i mean are you familiar with grade 7-8-9-10 stuff, like vectors, numbers theory, derivative, absolute value, pythagorean theorem, cartesian plane and relevant operations, circles, tangents, lines.
You have to start with those, You should be able to go quickly through them, these are important.
Where do you live? Perhaps I know someone in the area.
Usually I see during the day posters of students willing to teach, usually their prices are fair, you don't really need a teacher with 15 years of experience, in fact, a student could help you achieve the same results.
I used to teach math/physics for terminal/university(some courses only) students. But that was between ~2007-2011 while i was in university and in French(It's basically the same in English so..)
If and only if you didn't find someone whose job is a teacher tell me, I'll get my old books and see if i can still help.

PS: If you need some help in algorithms/programming I can help (I am software developer)
PS#2: Never give up, I am 27 and I don't have a degree, I sucked at school (was only good at math/physics though) tutoring was my only income for years until I've recently start working as a developer.

Good luck!!

I am familiar with some of those, the rest will follow soon hopefully! Thanks for the tips, on that note I think I may have found a suitable teacher. I'll report back once we have our first session (which should be soon enough).

Thanks for the offer! I think I may have found a suitable tutor for me; by pure chance and through a friend. Hopefully it'll work out.

Regarding algorithms, I'm actually very excited about learning about, and working through them, both on paper and online! I ordered this book a few weeks ago and I'm finally getting my hands on it tomorrow afternoon!
Been watching some videos about Big O notation just to get a general idea about them, I hope I'll be able to actually wrap my mind around the concepts and eventually become fluent in them.

Which country do you work in? I'd love to hear more about your daily life as a developer, what concepts and topics you use on a daily basis and how algorithms and math actually help you achieve them? That's a lot of big questions but an answer to any of them would be helpful :)

Finally, thanks for the encouragement. I've found that most ppl on this forum are unusually nice and constructive, and that's super cool :)

I work in Lebanon.
Basically we're coding all day nothing special :P But if you love coding it makes you feel like a kind of a 'God' when everything run flawlessly.
The worst thing it may happen when you have to re-do all your work because of the incompetence of a business analyst/project manager (just like what happened recently, I had to delete 6 months of my own code)

Algorithms and math: You won't really needs math/depth knowledge of algorithms because libraries/frameworks do almost everything. e.g: If you want to sort something, you won't need to think and decide which algorithms you need to use, you just need to know the syntax.

What math actually do? It trains your brain to think faster, solve problem faster and so on. IMHO Math is only needed if you want to be a computer scientist. A software developer may never needs math in his entire life unless he's coding for science.
Well! Turns out the teacher I found isn't that reliable :)

So I am looking for one, again. Thought I'd bump the post since this changed, hopefully this doesn't break too many forum rules.

Badaro.

Just as to not waste your time; the reason I'm reluctant in taking classes from students is because although they can be great mathematicians, they may not be good teachers.

Thought I'd put it out there. Appreciate you looking into it!

Hello, I'm a high school math teacher. I have a B.S. in math and a teaching diploma and I enjoy teaching people having troubles with math as I use too.
Cool, just sent you an email :)
