Hey Lebgeekers,
So i'm planning to build a rig on a budget in the following weeks (expecting an extra income), and as you guys are the reference in rig building, i'd like your opinion.
As i'm more of a computer enthusiast than a real geek, please i apologies if i made any mistakes choosing the parts:
The rig is aimed to play at 60+ FPS on a 1080p:
all parts are available on PcandParts.com, i couldn't find any cheaper parts elsewhere.
259$ Zotac ZT-P10600B-10M GeForce GTX 1060 AMP! 6GB GDDR5 Super Compact Dual-Fan IceStorm Cooling
62$ Kingston SSDNow V300 Series SV300S37A/240G 2.5" 240GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)
193$ Skylake 3.20 GHz - i5-6500
33$ Kingston 8 gb DDR4-2133
182$ MSI Z170-A PRO
14$ Corsair CAS-AF120-QE-BLED Air Series AF120 LED Blue Quiet Edition High Airflow 120mm Fan
46$ Thermaltake LT-550P Litepower 550W PSU $46.00
14$ NZXT RF-FZ120-R1 FZ 120mm LED High Airflow 120mm Red LED Fan Link
74$ NZXT Phantom 240 CA-P240-B6 Matte Black/Red Steel ATX Mid Tower Case USB 3.0 /win Link
Total including VAT : 964 $
It's a bit over budget honestly, and i'd like to SLI in a few years so i'd prefer to go with the AMD RX480 (as i've read that you can't with a 1060GTX) but couldn't find any in Lebanon.
Thanks for your time,
it will also be my first build, so if any of you guys likes to help building PCs, beers are on me.
mmk92
If you're planning to SLI you're better off with a 1070.
The motherboard is overkill, unless you need the extra features go for something cheaper, in many cases a 60ish$ motherboard that supports your RAM and CPU should suffice. You could use the money you saved to cover the difference for the 1070.
You could also save up on the fans, and the case. For me, since my motherboard was matx, i went for a cougar mg100 for around 30$ with tax and it includes a case fan. I have a gtx 980 strix which fits perfectly with room to spare. Also Pascal is very efficient so it would run at the nominal temperatures.
Die_Kapitan
Get a (much) cheaper motherboard, get a better PSU (at least something like the Smart SE which even though it's barely decent, is still miles better than the Litepower), don't get the V300, Kingston did a bait and switch with it and switched the NAND to much slower NAND, so it's one of the slowest if not the slowest SSD on the market, you're better off with a Kingston UV400 (listed on PCandParts as V400) or an ADATA SP550., don't get an extra fan, it's a waste of money and will at best lower the temps by a degree or two, and, while it's pretty much a matter of choice, get an S340 instead of the Phantom, or a Cougar MX310.
tiny-fx
the only thing that is a must change is the psu, the rest are all ok, you can go with a cheaper motherboard though...
Georges00
Just like others said.
Go with a cheaper motherboard and get a better PSU

Thanks for the quick answer,
So the updated version:
259 Zotac ZT-P10600B-10M GeForce GTX 1060 AMP! 6GB GDDR5 Super Compact Dual-Fan IceStorm Cooling Link
65 Kingston SSDNow V400 Series SUV400S37/240G 2.5" 240GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)
193 Skylake 3.20 GHz - i5-6500
33 Kingston 8gb DDR4-2133
77 Gigabyte GA-H110M-S2HP (rev. 1.0) (DDR4) (LGA1151) Link
55 Thermaltake Smart SE SPS-530M 530W PSU
14 NZXT RF-FZ120-R1 FZ 120mm LED High Airflow 120mm Red LED Fan Link
74 NZXT S340 CA-S340MB-GR Matte Black/Red ATX Mid Tower Case USB 3.0 /win
Total with VAT: 847 USD
@ mmk92, thanks for the tips, i've looked arround for a 1070 but the price difference is too steep (259 vs 465 excl vat), your completly right about the case, but i think that half of the pleasure of building my own rig is that it'll look good, maybe add a led or two later on. Also, i've modified the motherboard to the cheapest DDR'4 i5 compatible i could find.
@Die_Kapitan, thanks for the tips, i've switched the SSD to the V400 as advised, removed the second fan and switched to the S340.
so, do you think i should wait a couple of weeks to see if the RX490 becomes available at PC and Parts ?
ballad
I recommend wait for the other zotac gtx1060 with the 2 fans, they have a better cooling and lower temp.
This small one will have a running fan all time

I recommend the i5 6600 instead of the 6500. It's a higher clock speed. And some games are poorly optimized, the higher clock speed will make a difference. And regardless it would be more future proof for just 20$.
Concerning the GPU, you might want to wait a bit and get the 3GB gtx 1060 version when it arrives to here. It would be cheaper, and should not make a noticable difference in 1080p gaming.
The gtx 1060 6GB is not powerful enough for 4k gaming or the type of gaming that uses 6 GB of ram, I don't think it is a very cost efficient model.
anayman_k7
Well, the second update of the items is looking much better than the first, i5-6500 is very good for a semi budget build, the GTX1060 will serve you well in 1080p for the upcoming years (I'm on GTX780 which is less powerful than GTX970, the GTX1060 matches GTx980 in performance), I recommend that you choose a cheaper case and get a 1TB HDD, this case is beautiful but do you need all that?
- ThermalTake CA-1B2-00M1NN-00 Versa H21 Mid-tower Chassis $45.00
- 1TB WD10EZEX 7200RPM SATAIII 64MB $49.00
I've built a case before using this case (Windowed version) and it is a good choice for the price

Note: The 1060 AMP is out of stock, I guess you mean the Mini version.

@Draguen
I advice you to go with:
Skylake 3.30 GHz - i5-6600 6M/LGA1151

For a 1080p/60Fps and "future proofing" for me I will go with a 1070 OC and not 1060 OC , if you decided to go with a 1060 OC go with the 6GB Vram not the 3GB Vram ! , as more titles with AAA High/Very textures are acceding the 3GB Vram easily even at 1080 p , more to come in 2017 and on., also 1080p requires at least 2xMSAA (for me 4x MSAA) which adds an over head + shadows + tessellation + global illumination etc..
Quantum Break
Assassin Creed Syndicate
Deus Ex: Mankind Divided
Are three AAA released titles that barely hit 60Fps on 1080p even with a 1070 OC.

I wanted to prove you wrong, but it turned out I was wrong. According to this
http://www.tweaktown.com/tweakipedia/90/much-vram-need-1080p-1440p-4k-aa-enabled/index.html There are games already that exceed 3GB vram of a GPU on 1080p. So yes I guess the 1060 that is out now is the reasonable choice.
Edit: Even though Linus says (and it is true) that the 6500 is the most cost efficient. CPUs are not easy to replace in the future, and for the price of just an extra 20$ you could get 8% more performance, it is not worth going cheap on the CPU. My philosophy is to always get the best i5 because it is hard to upgrade in the future, and poorly optimized games will run better with it.
anayman_k7
I need to add a small point about future upgrading, I started with i5-4460 and after couple of years I replaced it with i5-4670k + extra cash and overclocked it to 4.3Ghz, so if budget is tight don't be afraid to pull the trigger on a i5-6500
user
It's not a rule though. I have a 3570 cpu, I'd be more than happy to trade it+extra money for a 3570k for example. But trading cpus and finding matches are not simple.
anayman_k7
I don't want to put a lot of posts in this part of the discussion, but it depends on the architecture, I had an LGA1150 which is not that old, till today you can still find few people selling their used systems which had these 4th gen cpus, meanwhile the LGA1151 is not that old and add to that the new Kaby Lake CPU will also use the LGA1151 socket! so upgrading to the neweset 7th gen cpu is possible with current LGA1151 boards with a bios update to support them!

Happy to see that this tread is the source of constructive debate,
@ballad, you're right, i'll wait two weeks to see if PC and Parts (or any other affordable store) resupplies in GTX1060.
@anayman_k7, also right, bad copy past from my side ! it's the mini version that i'm talking about !
@TEch Guru, thanks for the video, i'll go for the i5-6600 then !
Also, regarding the HDD, i'm going to salvage the old 500Gb 7200rpm HDD i had in my old desktop.
the build is also design to be "VR ready" (even though i don't like the term, it should have enough juice to run a VR headset at an acceptable resolution / FPS. ideally.
in case i can find an RX480 from outside, should i go for it ? i mean from what i read, the 1060 and 480 have the same approx performances, except that in a couple of years i could pick another second hand 480 for a few bucks, SLI and give to the rig a second life. it's more about being future proof than a real performance difference in my opinion.

@Draguen
Mate, I do recommend to go with more than 8GB of System Ram , Examples:
Deus Ex: Mankind Divided PC Performance Review
http://www.overclock3d.net/reviews/gpu_displays/deus_ex_mankind_divided_pc_performance_review/6
"RAM usage rarely goes over 7.5GB, meaning that some users may require more than 8GB of memory if they want to run a few extra background applications. "
Personal Experience:
Look at ,My Ram Usage - 9.9 GB / Was Playing Tomb Raider @ 1440p - Maximum Details / Direct X 12 / FXAA , with few applications in the background like MSI Gaming App , NZXT CAM App , InputMapper for Enabling the PS4 Joystick.
Also, the PSU is a straight change without any clarification - Go for at least Tier 2 PSUs 80Plus Gold Certified for the long run system stability/reliability.
Marduk
Actually isnt 8gb of ram enough for now? Its a budget build, get 8gb now, and 8gb later. Im currently on 8gb, i wanted to upgrade to 16gb but 8gb seems enough.(although win10 eats alot more ram than win7).get the essentials first(good psu......) then when you earn some money get the extras.
