Metalloy
hello guys,
I mentioned earlier that i am working on a new startup. so I would like to ask few questions here and get your remarks and suggestions:
1) working with professional company vs working with local talents? where to find each? ( specifically app and web development)
2) aspects to consider when dealing with developpers in all domains : ios, android, web?
3) do i have to learn coding myself? where to start how to code for ios? for android?
4) is it enough to learn to code on android and give it to another developper to rewrite as ios?
5) any other tips? general and specific.
thanks
Fischer
The fact that you are asking these questions means you are not ready to start a startup.
-Businessmen don't code.
-Since you have no previous experience, and you are alone, you are not qualified to hire anyone, how can you tell a good programmer from a bad one? How can you tell who fits your needs? How can you tell that your employees aren't lying about deadlines? How can you tell you aren't being ripped off?
-Hence, I suggest you look for a respectable company to get going, at the very least you can sue them if they didn't respect their deadline and you can negotiate about the price and forget about the rest. When your startup becomes big, you can then think about starting your own company. Don't sign anything without having a lawyer.

hey Fischer,
This is an old post , I have already went through major milestones in this project and will be ready to launch the product before the end of this year. Wish me good Fortune!

Good Luck Metalloy.
Although common wisdom says that experienced and knowledgeable persons should lead least knowledgeable ones, the world is full of examples of bosses who are unfortunately ignorant about their trade. But they can still make it, in any case, further then those who don't try because they think that they're not qualified enough.
Just please if you're not qualified, stay away from technical decisions and let the specialists do their job.

thanks rolf!
I am not a programmer and so my knowledge will only take me to certain extents I understand that. That's why I do tons of research before making any decision related to technical matters, at least to be able to know what I want from the final product before signing any contract.
And yes software is new terrain for me, but managing projects ain't; and I believe that one of my strong points is that I've played different roles in similar project, small or big, enough to appreciate the importance of each detail, of each individual contributing in this project, and to know when to listen to those who know better in those fields.
I strongly believe that a successful manager is the one who knows just enough from every aspect of the project to be able to first communicate with the people with the proper know how and second coordinate the efforts of all these people into hopefully a succeful project/product.
And to make it clear, I am not a total ignorant, I am not starting a programming firm, I just need app development to bring my business model to life which by itself is not software related. hope this clear things up.

As long as you work with people you trust, you don't need to learn anything, finding good people is the tough part and most importantly listening to those people. You can't be a developer, lawyer, accountant etc... in your company, in the end you have to delegate.
I wish you best of luck in your launch.
