Yea sure: it was civilized.
then eWizzard showed up.
Even though the way he presented it and his wording is very poorly chosen the man does present an extremely valid point. I might not agree entirely with what he's saying but the major issues he's bringing up are ones that I personally encounter almost everyday.
Now let me explain this in a more civilised manner and please keep note that this is not aimed to attack anyone's personal beliefs, since very few people these days follow their religion exactly to the letter and those who do and act upon it are usually what people are calling "extremists" these days. Just to start off with a little example, I'm not sure how familiar you are with the lebanese law, but there's this law that was put in place for religious reasons which basically allows a man to kill another man if that person is illegitimatly sleeping with his sister or close family member and recieve a reduced sentence because apparently it's "jarimit charaf".
There are a ton of other examples where religion or as some here are calling it "a different opinion" is affecting negatively on other people's lives. Now I'm all for different opinions, just not when they're bad or misformed opinions (not necessarily talking about religion here). Ask yourself if you would accept someone else's opinion if you were almost certain that it was wrong i.e: if I came to you and said the earth is flat would you respect my opinion then?
Now how this links to religion is the fact that most religions do not agree on a lot of things. When this "opinion" is supposedly taught by your deity through their holy book or whatever it becomes extremely difficult to accept that it is wrong. One example would be homosexual people, some religions think they are okay, others say they are unnatural others even say they are sacred many others also say they're the devil himself. Now when these different views come together in a discussion one has to admit that he is wrong otherwise all 4 views would be correct and that simply cannot be true. This is where accepting a false opinion comes into play and humans simply cannot willingly do that which usually ends up creating religious wars.
This is why a lot of atheists are so eager to debate these things all the time. People keep trying to shove them with their religious opinions which atheists have already established are almost completely false and no matter how hard you try they still, for the 10 000th time, hit you with "but what created the big bang then?" with their smug faces like they just debunked a whole movement.
This is why you cannot respect all religious opinions especially in government because a lot of them completely contradict each other and none of them have any proof to back them up. Which is why a secular government which follows science and facts is always the best way to go.
