LG recently announced the G5 with a dual camera setup and modular design (inspired by Google's Ara project I guess). This is probably the ultimate geeky phone with the modular port down there. What do you think about it? The only drawback I can see is that usually more moving parts in a phone isn't too good, with time I'm afraid it wont hold up.
LG G5, real innovation
In theory I'm a fan of the modular approach. I'm curious to see which modules are going to be available. LG doesn't strike me as the kind of company who knows how to build a community of contributors around its products; in my experience, any "module" approach has always depended on 3rd party community developers to succeed.
Other than that, I have no idea about the phone itself and its specs. It looks like you can totally ignore the modular port and treat it as a regular traditional smartphone.

I hope it doesn't have any sort of "DRM". (Not sure what to call it)
Custom modules that don't have to pass through LG inspection or get their approval

Proprietary is the word you're looking for.Georges00 wroteI hope it doesn't have any sort of "DRM". (Not sure what to call it)

And yes, I agree. Usually devices with cross manufsctuerer standards give flexibilitybfor more accessibility for third party manufacturers which would lead to popularity of the modules.
Imagine if USB was proprietary to one device or manufacturer, it wouldn't have blown up like it did.
LG already said they are opening the module to 3rd party developers during MWC so we should see some nice stuff.
LG is awesome, got the G4 not a long while ago and i can safely say these guys know how to make smartphones.
