I had a teacher at the university who used to say that EDL cut the electricity specially in summer so that A/C and other fragile electric stuff crush and so people are obliged to buy new ones. So a sort of agreement between big names in electronic sales in Lebanon and EDL.
I didn't believe this teacher back then.
Though the last 2 weeks, EDL is RANDOMLY cutting the electricity in Beirut while no storm nor wind are causing it.
Today for example they cut it at 12:17 instead of 12, the other day they did at 7:43 instead of 6pm!!
So erratic and random cuts can be bad for Power Supplies, I usually stop working on PC at the normal cut period meaning 12 and 3pm so my PC won't be killed by EDL, but now they are doing it at crazy times.
Yes I used to have a UPS but it didn't last itself more than a year

power alone outages rarely cause harm to devices, maybe PCs since the unexpected shutdowns have some effect there.
What damages electronics mostly, is the power higher and lower voltages and frequency.
I don't think EDL is doing a deal with electronic shops to internationally damage people, electrical and electronic appliances. simply because most big brands offer warranties, and if the device gets damaged they will bear the costs of fixing it.

I am experiencing the same thing, I am glad my UPS 3 years old now is still functioning . I am sure by now that thing needs new batteries.
I lost hope with EDL and those generators guys long long time ago, so get a good UPS and put your mind at ease.

Bro Lebanon is a middle age country ruled by $$ mafias, when you see that Zahle got a super solution for electricity and the rest of Lebanon no, it's a proof that ''they'' don't want to fix electricity, instead they have agreements with thousands of moteurs guys for $ sake.
Meanwhile we are dying of CO2 and high pollution rates because of burned mazout, but who cares? they make millions $ ;)
dsoftware-king
no doubt about that. organized greedy Mafia . but hey, they are smart. although they are ripping the hell out of us we still follow them like zombies.
BTW, our governors are the lowest creatures within all the galaxies.

Only your desktop PC and consoles (PS4 etc) could be affected by a sudden drop of current. A/C and other appliances wont be affected. This theory is bogus. Yes Lebanon is turning into a hellhole but we haven't reached this point.

EDL makes direct deals with the moteur ishtirak people to cut the electricity at "random" times so those people get more customers.
I confronted a lady who works at EDL once about this. She admit this is the case but made sure I understand she has no choice or opinion in this. We had 6 hours of outage in ashrafieh today.
Only certain devices such as desktop computers and refrigerators are normally affected.

The Central of Ogero at Sassine is hurt by these random cut, it's taking 10 to 30mins to get internet back

$$ mafias: lets be honest here about these filthy pigs, they have weapons and are ready 24/24h to f*ck with anyone standing in their way.

This is what the Lebanese people want.

You summed it up very nicely.
I feel the main issue is that the government is split between multiple parties who compete over positions of authority based on personal rivalry which civilians are not part of instead of plans/visions for the nation. A large portion of the Lebanese people want this but because they are oblivious and can't see the damage that happens are a result of reinforcing such behavior.
When the government doesn't really care much for the people and doesn't make an effort to create opportunities. weird jobs like "moteur guy", "cable guy", and the guy who yells jounieh/jbeil each time a bus passes at dora roundabout in exchange for 2000LL from each of those buses started to spawn. Politicians allow this behavior and accept large "commissions" to keep the corruption running because it is cheaper than solving the root issues.
It is not enough to be leader to run a country. You have to be a good project manager, etc...

I always enjoy these small conversations about our corrupted country.
I am more of an optimistic though. There is always a solution for those minor things which we are facing. For this electricity problem just get a voltage regulator for your pc. Also you could buy a signwave UPS which will not cause any issues to your PC.
I know the problem is much bigger than just electricity but Lebanon will always be the Lebanon we know. In arabic terms law badda tchatte ghayyamit.
Remember that our politicians are corrupted ONLY because WE let them.
A thief doesn't keeps on stealing unless he is sure he can get away with it.

Boom!
Today again 11:24 random cut, 3sec later they put back electricity....they have a definite will to kill our electronics.
The only solution for this country is a revolution, but we need a wide revolution with all communities or it won't work
hussam
I don't think it is an attempt to ruin people's electronics. They think if they turn off the electircity, your PC/television/etc... will turn off and you are not home to turn them back on. They are saving power because they are selling a significant portion of the fuel to the mouteur ishtirak guys.
haidcar
i highly doubt that EDL is conspiring to kill our electronics. in the last 24 hours, most power plants suffered failures which brought them off the national grid. it's not the first time such thing happens and won't be the last, due to many factors such as corruption, lack of responsibility, and some people.
xazbrat
It is not electronics that gets killed but rather big devices like refrigerators, freezers, and air conditioning, so I think you guys are missing the point :P. Electronic devices can run on a range of voltages, but other big devices have a propensity to break down because they need the voltage to be in a tighter range ie, 220-240 while electronic devices can go from 100-240. "Ishtirak' power is almost always less than 220 so these devices fight a long slow death before they succumb.
And while we are on the subject, let's not forget the light bulb mafias too. How many people have had a light bulb last anywhere near the number of hours on the package. :)

I don't think I've ever had a pack of pasta that was cooked within the time printed on the package. Same thing for instant noodles.

I Live at Verdun Area
Electricity shortage of 3 hours on average , but some times 6 hours " mainly summer" and not very often.
AVRs are installed for the Refrigerator, TVs and their peripherals like BlueRay Players and Receivers (Two AVRs for Two Main Sets)
UPS for the Playstation 4 and One for the Desktop (CE 2200 VA UPS XP Series 1320W (4x Batteries)) which acts as am AVR too.
Building Generator (30 Amp for two Floors)
In Summer:
A Home Industrial UPS (11 Amp) + the Building the Generator
You can cope with this country , but you need to take all the precautionary steps and we live and die here :)
