  • Will this card fit in my current case ?

Ok so I have this case (had it for 10 years, old I know but it's still almost new as I never carry it around).

I currently have the Nvidia GTX 550 Ti installed in it and it fits easily.

But, I was planning to upgrade my PC, sometime this year, to a Skylake CPU, DDR4 memory and the EVGA GTX 960 4GB Gaming card sold by PCandParts.

My question is, how do I make sure the GTX 960 will fit in my case (mostly length wise) and, even if it does, that it will not block airflow coming from the front intake fan ?
Assuming the GTX 960 doesn't fit in my current case and I end up buying the GTX 950 SC GAMING 2GB... will the performance be much inferior to that of a GTX 960 (other than the fact that the 950 has only 2GB VRam instead of 4GB Vram on the 960) ?
Trying to build a PC that would smoothly run games like Star Citizen and No Man's Sky when they come out.

For better Air Circulation , and proper cable management - advisable to change the case.
Thanks for the reply but I wish changing the case was an option.
I will be replacing the motherboard, cpu, cpu cooler, ram, vga, hard disk (getting SSD + WD Black Edition), and possibly the psu so I will be on a very tight budget.

That's why I asked if I should get the 950 instead of the 960 since it is only 173mm long (about 5 cm less than my current 550 card).

So I ask again will the performance of a 950 2GB be much inferior to that of a GTX 960 4GB ?
If you can increase your budget a but go with the MSI 970 Gaming 4GB , The 970 is more performance per dollar and will certainly last you longer. With a good and efficient power supply unit and good circulation the Core clock of the 970 can be OC to 1500mhz , achieving an approximate 980 performance.

950 Review:

The GTX 950 is basically a cheaper GTX 960, with proportionately less performance but the same feature set. The the performance difference between the new GTX 950 and our GTX 960s, it’s impossible to recommend the latter over the former. The only real benefit you get from a 960 would come from 4GB of on-board memory, which might help on the long run.
That's what I was aiming for, a 4GB card instead of 2GB. But the fact that this means I will have to change my case (due to dimensions mentioned in my original post) discouraged me from doing so.
Did u try like tinker in you case and remove the metal plate for the HDDs?! :p
I know it is a crazy idea but if it is possible you should try it
And it seems you are going to change your whole build. I would like to know what are the parts you are getting, just for curiosity .
the 970 would be your best choice of course, i have the 980 running at 1279MHz, and temps are amazing, especially now, on idle it is 18C , and under heavy load 57C max, crazy i know (cpu 13C idle and 28C max i7 4790k)
No, I haven't decided on all the parts yet and I don't think I can remove the metal plate for the HDD from the case.

Thanks for the advice about the card but, for the record, I am not looking for a top-notch machine. Just something newer than my "2.66 GHz core 2 duo", 6GB ram and GTX 550 Ti to run the newest games (like Fallout 4, the upcoming Star Citizen, No Man's Land and Space Engineers for example) smoothly enough to enjoy. I will of course be installing 16GB ram as it seems to be a must for Space Engineers with planets.
so it is not about Skylake Cpu and the Z170 chipset motherboards and DDR4 RAM?
so your new upgrade would be like : Haswell 3.50 GHz - i5-4690K, Asus Z97-Pro Gamer , Kingston HyperX Fury 16Gb, something like that?
If you want to i can tell you my specs, have my pc since june
Yes I will go for a Skylake CPU, Kingston DDR4 RAM and a Z170 chipset (most likely ASUS).
As we all buy from pcadnparts :p let us see which to get
Skylake 3.30 GHz - i5-6600 6M/LGA1151 $223.00
HyperX Fury 16GB (2 x 8GB) 288-Pin DDR4 2400
Asus MAXIMUS VIII RANGER Z170 (DDR4) (LGA1151) Link $255.00
Samsung evo ssd definetely, WD green
I do not know if u can find corsair psu
At last, get 970 hahaha
Otherwise get a r9 390 maybe?!
How about you stay away from Skylake and go with Haswell with DDR3 RAM
It's cheaper. Then use the money that you saved on a new case. You can get a good one for around 100$
960 with 4GB doesn't make sense. You should get at least a 970 or an AMD R9 290. The 960 is just not fast enough to run the games that require that much VRAM to run at a decent FPS.
@Satfoun You must be living with pinguins to have those temperatures. "Ma tzida" :P I own a 4790K cooled with a closed loop liquid cooler (Antec Kuhler 920 H2P), it goes up to 50°C with ease, no oc applied. The cpu usually idles at temperatures slightly higher than ambient temperature, 18°C during spring/summer cannot be achieved, and I won't debate you about winter right now.

Listen to this man right here... go with the NZXT S340 on PCandParts

if i where you i would go for a case that includes a psu
something like this
Cooler Master Elite 350 RC-350 Case RC-350-KKR500-TM w/ TM-500-PSSR-M3 500W PSU
on pcandparts.com
its 59$+vat
@DG

For the PSU:

-Never get a case with a PSU combo , the PSU quality is so cheap with a Tier 6 quality components. The PSU is very crucial for your system stability and components durability , especially you have a 960 or a 970 installed. Look for an at least 80Plus Bronze Certified PSU in the 550 - 650 W range.

Inwin Power Man 650 650W PSU Link $82.00 ,

-For the Case:
ThermalTake CA-1C7-00M1WN-00 Core V41 Window Mid-Tower Chassis $105.00

-For the GPU
I highly recommend to go with a a GTX 970 - Highly Overclock-able, Runs Cool , Draw Efficient Power

MSI GTX 970 Gaming 4G GeForce GTX 970 4GB DDR5 Link Now in stock $369.00

CPU:
Haswell 3.10 GHz - i5-4440 6M/LGA1150 $177.00

Motherboard:
Asus H97M-E (DDR3) (LGA1150) Link $116.00

Ram:
Kingston HyperX Fury White Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 1866 Desktop Memory Model HX318C10FWK2/16 $81.00

Storage:
1TB WD1003FZEX 7200RPM SATAIII 64MB Black Edition -Link $81.00

Dammm , hell no am not exagerating, and yeah those temps are during this storm. And well during summer , if i had the quiet fan extreme on, the max temp would reach 40, if it was off , the max temp would be 35 ( during summer, hottest days of summer and no AC turned on or amything , and i live by the coast. Well guess now im happy that i know my cpu cooler works perfectly well hahaha
Ok, thanks for the replies everyone (and the detailed reply Tech Guru). I appreciate your suggestions.

Bullshit, screenshot or it didn't happen An air cooler (assuming it's stock too) can't keep the 4 cores running at 4.2 GHz at 35 degrees. Here are screenshots of Idle state / Stressed / Post-stress. Keep in mind the CPU die is cooled with a liquid at ~28 degrees. Notice how after the stress test ends how the temps drop back to 28 degrees straight away, but when it's stressed it has to heat up.

Post us a screenshot with idle at 18 degrees (PC has to be running for more than 5 minutes) and stressed at 35 and I'll go home ;)

Who mentioned anything about stock cooler :|
I have thermaltake Frio extreme, it costs ~100$
Imagine those temps with stock cooler , no one would ever buy other cpu coolers haha
The pic in the middle is not showing dont know why
You want me to use something by Msi , on my asus pc?!
i feel like i insulted you with my earlier posts, not my intentios
Happy new year mike :p
