  • Studying Medicine, LAU or AUB?

Short summary of my academics, I studies in a public secondary school, passed SV (though my grade was not good), currently starting my third year of Biology in the Lebanese University, I expect an average of about 70/100 (over the 3 years, might be 80 or 85 if only the last year is taken into account). I'll be getting my Bachelors of the Lebanese University, and was wondering since I've decided to switch to medicine.

First question: Will former grades be very relevant to the chances of joining medical school in either university? Do you think I'll manage to get in?

Second question: I need to know your opinion guys, what REALLY makes one better than the other? The only arguments I've heard supporting AUB so far is seniority in the field of medicine and a possibly stricter study program. Is that all it is to it? What are the different future prospects for a student of either university? Will one find himself more comfortable than the other finding/doing their job?
Any answer is appreciated, thanks.
I don't know much info about LAU, but a close relative is an AUB grad. AUB has its own medical center the AUH and they have been in this field long before LAU, and AUH are simply known as the top hospital in Lebanon (Of course american system). In addition to the potential of directly starting practicing in AUH when you graduate, they have already strong established connection with several US hospitals/universities such as case western university ( where Microsoft holo lense was developed and tested in the medical field), where you can do your specialty or sub-specialty.

One thing to ask for (I am not quite sure about this) is the thing they call american board. Even if you graduate from AUB you don't have the right to practice as a doctor in USA . So you need to repeat your specialty and graduate from a US university. Ask more about thing subject in order not to waste a couple of year in Lebanon like my relative did.
Thanks eliminator, I have heard that AUB have strong connections in the US, but I don't intend to practice medicine abroad. I've still haven't heard about LAU but it's also supposedly associated with the US in some ways.. Haven't had anyone confirm it yet though.

LAU is associated with Harvard medical school

but you need to have some exceptional grades to study there.
you should also mind the 30K$ yearly cost of the medical program, and in that program financial aid is very limited.
I have a preference for AUB but I don't think it makes that much difference. Often when you can't decide it's because it doesn't make much difference, one or another.
But yeah if you study medicine you'll be spending years and years there so it makes sense to pick carefully.
LAU graduate here (not medicine though). Take my word for it, AUB is better than LAU in everything. It wouldn't surprise me if even the janitors are better at AUB. However sorry to say that a 70% average will probably never get you into either medicine program!

Are you sure? According to my knowledge, you can have a preparatory year if you didn't take some of the required courses, then have an MCAT test. They didn't really mention a specific GPA on the LAU website, and the grading in the Lebanese University is much tougher than that of other universities..
AUB and LAU grads with 80 average have trouble getting in.

if you get accepted in any of them it would be a miracle ...
I got more info about the admissions into LAU, right now I need to push my GPA this year and work hard for the MCAT exams. Getting a high score on the MCAT would give me the best chance of being accepted.
Good luck man I hope you get in! But remember that even if you don't it doesn't have to stop you fulfilling your wish to be a doctor, just do it elsewhere :)
