Don't forget that the R9 390X's chip is a Grenada XT, which is a refresh of the Hawaii XT on the R9 290X, so it's based on a more than two years old chip and architectural refresh, while the GTX 980 is a new architecture and a less than one year old chip. It's pretty amazing how good of a refresh AMD did, the 290X went head-to-head with the 970, the 390X which is based on roughly the same chip, is close to the 980 in performance.
