Okay, I don't usually like posting stuff like this , but i am kind of lost here and i need your opinion.

In exactly 4 days I have an official exam for the french bac, for those of you who don't know , in 1ere bac francais , aka bac 1 , you have to present a french exam devided into two categories, ecrit (written exam) , and oral , along with a project that has nothing to do with the french subject called TPE.

anyway , up until now , i have done ecrit and TPE and did pretty well in both, now i still have oral in 4 days , and i didn't even study yet, why? because i feel it is a complete waste of time. Let me guide you through this, for oral , you have to memorise the analysis of 18 texts, each analysis is around 3-8 pages long depending upon the text, along with some notes on other texts and pictures you have to remember, all the texts and pictures i should know form a 90 page book called descriptif, so i am responsible of any question they will ask me on any text/picture of the 90 pages. You can already see that memorizing all of it is a lot and will be a waste of time since i will never use them ever again in my life, and i will most probably forget them 5 mins after the exam.

The oral has a coefficient of 2 , whereas math in SG bac francais has a coeff of 9 if i am not mistaken , so you can see it will not affect my bac grade a lot. (Plus, i have been told that unless i want a scholarship , my bac grade will not be taken into consideration by any uni so.. and my school grades are pretty good, I LOVE maths physics and chemistry, i got a 19.5/20 on my math exam , 18.5 on my physics exam and 20.5 , yes 20.5/20 on my chemistry exam, everyone failed it so my teacher had to add 0.75 to everyone so that the grades get a little better lol)

Here are the reasons why i think it is useless:
-It is memorising like a parrot without even understanding , which i hate
-I am in SG class , so french should be my last priority
-I am doing pretty well in the subjects i should give attention to, scientific subjects plus average of 17/20
-It is a matter of luck since the examiner chooses your text along with the questions he will ask you, so i might study 17/18 texts and get the 18th, whereas i might study one or two and get them , or study everything but get a really hard question
-It is bac Francais
-It's something i cannot stand, litterature is a subject i cannot bare, so asking me to study it is torture

Now I know that most of you will tell me to study it anyway, that it's only one exam and that it'll be over before i know it, but don't think i haven't tried, i have been trying to start a week and a half ago , and so far i have done 2 texts out of 18 , and i am the type that studies hard so...

Now sorry for the long intro, my question is , is it normal to have this type of reaction to a certain subject? am i doing something wrong, or does everyone have a weakpoint like that? will bac grades affect my future? I wish to enter roumieh so should i give a lot of importance to french bac? should i really give that much attention to something i don't enjoy doing? yes of course i won't be loving everything i face in life , but it's not that i don't like it , it's that i can't stand this subject, it justs seems like complete BS ... i mean it's french literature for god's sake...

Thank you for your replies

It's perfectly normal, I presented my oral and ecrit 4 years ago and had the same reaction as yours (even most of my friends would tell you the same). Personally I didn't mind listening in class from time to time but it was pretty lame having to memorize them.
Don't even remind me about the ecrit exam and the weird text they gave us, if I only I could ever understand the meaning behind it lol.

Your french bac grades can be as important as the lebanese ones, assuming you want a scholarship or getting accepted "sur titre" if you're planning to go to USJ for example (You need a 16+ on either french or lebanese bac).

But if you're planning to go to roumieh, I believe you're going to have to present some exams, so it won't matter as long you pass.

This is seriously up to you, no one can give you a proper answer. Logically speaking, it would be wise to tell you to give it your best at least.

In the end, as long as you have good grades the oral and ecrit exams shouldn't affect you that much. For my exam, I only studied a couple of texts that I actually liked and I was lucky enough to be asked about one of them.

Also, if you don't mind what school do you go to?
Hey, thank you for your reply , yes indeed , i listen in class too , i never take a subject lightly at first, i always give it a second and third chance, but here we are, at the end of the year, it still sucks :D

So it's a relief that some people face the same problem :) now i know i'm not doing something completly wrong ...

when you say that my bac grades will affect my futur in uni , but i heard people saying that they take your "dossier" before christmas, to see if you're accepted or not , and then ask for your bac grades to see if you passed or not , but the acceptance depends upon your school grades and not bac, not sure though, but i have fairly high grades in everything, one oral grade won't do much harm, plus luck might be on my side and i get a text i actually like just like you :D

And yes there is the entrance exam for roumieh , so grades won't bother my conscience that much , but it sucks that grades matter so much whereas they shouldn't :S

Thank You again , and I am a Nazareth Student :D
Regarding the dossier, they do take it before christmas. But assuming you're planning to USJ (FM precisely, medicine or dentistry), you can get accepted depending on your bac grades if you get a 16+. Anyhow I was just giving you most of the examples.

Good luck on your exam :)
Something is wrong, yes. When I was at school, at the Lycée Français, a long long time ago (like the last century), they hammered us with propaganda about how the "French education philosophy" or whatever they call it is better than the Lebanese system because it is NOT based on memorizing but puts the emphasis on understanding and analysis. It was like they had built a rocket and went to Mars.
I don't think this has changed much, if any they should be putting even more emphasis on comprehension and less on memorizing.
I am surprized that you are expected to "memorize things like a parrot".

I would not recommend skipping studying for l'examen oral altogether. I think it might appear like you're trying to bullsh*t the examinator (or whatever that person is called) and it might bring you a bad grade. At least learn some things so that you can elaborate and base your discussion on something, and not look like you studied nothing at all or like you're trying to outsmart them.

If I remember well (because it was the last century), the exam is pretty easy - but it depends a lot on the interrogator, so no need to stress too much.
And if your attitude is I'm not going to study because I will forget it, then you will have trouble at uni as well.
Larsa wrote i mean it's french literature for god's sake...
They didn't teach you about respect for litterature either? It's supposed to be a French thing as well.
I can understand that you feel like this if you're force-fed that stuff, for which you don't seem to care at the moment, by a teacher who might not care about it either.
But it's a big world and many people feel the opposite.

I felt like this about philosophy, but then later on when I met people who really like philosophy and discussed it with me in a friendly manner (not like a teacher), sharing their genuine interest, then my perspective changed. I still don't like it, I mean I won't go buy and read books about philosophy, but I know there are nice things in philosophy, things worth knowing or speaking about and I can understand that someone would like it.

You're not going to take the bac again in your life. I hope you won't anyway. So if you get a good grade in this particular part you'll probably be happier in the future about it than kinda skipping it, I doubt that's something you'll be happy and proud about.

But hey to each his own. You are not me (and vice-versa).

Good luck whatever you decide!

You're doing well to look beyond that. Soon it will be over.
