Who is using ROS here, over native implementation like TCP/IP internodes?
What's your experience with it?
A Quick description (from ros.org):

I would highly recommend following this as intro (learn by doing - way) DIY robot which utilizes the Arduino as the controller, Kinect , and any notebook as processing :
