  • Generic Chinese Phone (for Android)?

I'm looking at generic smartphones running android. They come in all sorts of brands (some funny names) and are relatively cheap.

I was specifically looking at this model (please don't laugh at the name):
https://www.chinavasion.com/china/wholesale/Android_Phones/Large_Screen_Android_Phones/UHAPPY_UP520_Quad_Core_Phone_-_5_Inch_IPS_Screen_Android_4.4_Quad_Core_MTK6582_1.3GHz_CPU_8GB_ROM_1GB_RAM_2x_SIM_Black/

It says that the CPU is : MTK6582 Quad-Core1.3Ghz
Any idea how fast that is?

Any other advice about these generic phones?
Mediatek SoCs are just great and comparable to snapdragons, and even better in some cases, but people thinks they are some chinese garbage because all big companies go with snapdragons and likes.
The latest MediaTek SoC i don't think its released yet is able to process 1080p video at 480fps for amazing slow motion footage, it supports 2k displays at 120Hz, it has eight 64-bit ARM Cortex-A53 cores clocked at up to 2.2Ghz that smokes the latest Snapdragon 810! Gameloft's famous ModernCombat 5 will be optimized for MediaTek's true Octacore CPUs so don't think they are bad they are actually great.

anyway the MTK6582 is an entry level SoC, there are even better choices for cheap prices.some Chinese phones will smoke the current snapdragons, but you need to know what to choose, i wish i can help you but am not sure which ones are real and not some garbage with fake spec sheet.

Right now, no, that's why I'm looking at a new phone :)

Sounds great, thanks. I'll try to find something better, I guess.
I was under the impression that it's pretty good already, the MTK6582, but looking closer at it, I think you're right. Not a bad phone for the price, if the quality is OK, but I'd want something a little fast by today's standards.

PS: did a quick search based on this article:

These phones are considerably more expensive, like around $500, whereas the cheap ones I was looking at were around $100. But then it's true what you said. It's an entry level CPU and I might as well buy a used Samsung S3.

Found some cheaper ones based on the MTK6592. From what I see online it's performance should be close to that of the LG Nexus 5. Sounds like good value.
Why don't you get an LG G2, 285 brand new for the 16GB 300 for 32GB. You could also find many used G2s around for less than it would cost you to import one of those Chinese phones. It is diffenetally miles ahead of the s3

Hmm. Or maybe a Sony Xperia. I also realized that the camera quality would matter to me, so I'm looking into that as well. Maybe a Lumia. I'm trying to stay away from iPhones.

LG G2 looks like a great choice anyway. It has a good camera. Lumia 1020 has one of the best cameras but the phone is a little old tech.

I have to say a nice thing about the "cheap" (not so cheap actually) chinese phones is they all have dual sim and a micro-sd slot.
Update:
I have kind of given up on the good camera requirement. Lumia 1020 has a great camera (it has a much bigger sensor than other phones) but I find it too expensive for what it offers. Then there is the HTC one M8, way over my budget. As for other phones it seems to be a question of which one sucks less for photos. I already have a good camera that I can carry around.

These are choices I'm interested into at the moment:

The THL T6 Pro seems to be cheap for it's performance. Already mentioned before.

I found this phone with the MTK6752 chipset which is supposed to be faster than the Google Nexus 5 and LG G3, almost as fast as the Galaxy S5 (!) and I can afford it:

The LG G2 seems to be like a good phone, so I'm not sure. Also the dual SIM of the chinese phones matters to me, I'll be using it. Same thing (to a lesser level) for the micro-sd slot. So I don't know. Might as well get the LG (2nd hand).

I'll have to decide between those three.
yea rolf LG G2 is still top of the line hardware wise, and i think it is cheap nowadays,if u find a second hand one go for it
I ordered a second hand L2 G2. I wish I could find a 32G, but 16GB should be OK.
Got it

Nice phone, thanks!
