  • Setting up a VPN router to use with chromecast, netflix...etc?

I'm subscribed to Terranet's 8Mb plan and watch Netflix on my Laptop every other day using a chrome extension called hola. The videos stream flawlessly and I'm having no issues with the buffer speed.

I set my mind on taking things a step further; which is setting up a chromecast (which I can purchase from pcandparts.com) or roku. I did some research and found out that there were 2 ways to access U.S netflix, apps, channels...etc. First method is by changing the DNS and the second one which is setting up a VPN router.

I tried several websites (blockless.com, unblock-us.com) but I still didn't have access to these exclusive U.S websites. I contacted customer support and they told me that terranet implements some kind of rule that makes it impossible to use the DNS "trick".

Then I headed over to the VPN choice, it seemed straight forward and foolproof, but boy I was wrong. Let's clear a couple of things out, I have the Technicolor Modem/wifi supplied by Terranet. I can connect a TP-Link WR841N (original frimware) to it without any setup; just plug in and instant internet access. I followed some youtube tutorial and flashed DD-WRT to my TP-Link router, but couldn't get the damn thing to connect to the internet. I set it up to Auto (meaning DHCP), but it had no internet access.

My question is can you guide me through this setup. How do I setup a DD-WRT router to a technicolor Modem? And is anyone using a VPN router or has a similar setup similar to the one I have in mind?

Thanks in Advance!
haidcar wroteTurn off DHCP

I'm not exactly tech savvy, but I'm worried about messing up the modem settings and having to wait a week for Terranet to reconfigure it. So could you please elaborate on how exactly should I turn off DHCP? And if I turned it off, how will that help me setup the DD-WRT?
you said you are connected to the router (Technicolor) by an Access point (TP-Link). you flashed the Access point with DD-WRT Firmware.

The Technicolor is acting as router in your case and it is preconfigured from terranet, no need to touch it.

On the TP-Link that you flashed with DD-WRT, you will have to access the DD-WRT on 192.168.1.1, click on Setup-> Basic Setup-> Connection type, pick Disable.

if this doesn't work try changing the connection type to Bridged.
I selected "Disable" and applied the settings, but it didn't work. I also couldn't find the "Bridged" type between the available selections.
can you tell me the options that you have?
Disabled - Static IP - Automatic Configuration (DHCP) - PPPoE - PPPoE Dual - PPTP - L2TP - HeartBeat Signal
thats weird you should have some sort of bridge mode. can you check what version of DD-WRT you are running?
ok, try the following:

connection type disabled.

scroll down and input the following the local ip address field . 192.168.1.2
and use 255.255.255.0 as the subnet.
disable DHCP server

you might have to reset you router if this doesn't work 30/30/30 reset.
Thank you so much. I really appreciate it. You won't believe how long I've been trying to get this thing to work. I will post an update as soon as I setup the VPN.
Hey Haidcar, the VPN didn't work. The customer support at IBVPN have no clue why it's not working, but I suspect it has something to doo with the DHCP settings.

You told me to disable DHCP for it to work, but the instructions on the website make me Enable them and change DNS1 and DNS2.

Should I try another website or do you know how to solve this issue?
Haidcar is right but if you cant get it to work, here is my method of doing it, leave the technicolor alone!
but first what is the ip of the technicolor?
Option1: get a better router, install an updated DD-WRT build (R7000 is my choice or if u can buy the R8000)
Option2: Post the logs
Option3: Ditch the VPN (tried it you will always be using 320p or rarely 480p) low quality videos (tried it before).
TheStunMan why would you need such router do you have a 100Mbps+ internet? or are you streaming full HD media to like 10 devices simultaneously?
DNA, I'm not gonna touch the technicolor, that's why I'm using this extra TP-Link router I had laying around. I'm more than willing to buy a better router as long as it won't cost me a fortune.

As for the technicolor, the IP is 192.168.1.254

What do you have in mind?
@TheStunMan,

Option 1: Starting 200$ at amazon, that's too expensive to what I had in mind. ( I was thinking in the 50-120$ range)

Option 2: Excuse my ignorance (I have no C.S or programming background), but what do you mean by post the logs?

Option 3: I really had my hopes up, don't burst my bubble just yet. I'm not aiming for full HD, 480p will do just fine. Did I mention this is gonna be a paid VPN (PureVPN, ExpressVPN or IBVPN); I'm already getting good quality with the free VPN I'm using in the off-peak hours, so I assume it will only get better with the paid ones.

Again, please feel free to add any suggestions and if you're willing, guide me through the process.

To export logs from your DD-WRT follow up with the wiki

I was using paid vpn and i used to have a somewhat good connection back then 8mb and the best i could get was 320p or 480p something which is not amusing (for me at least).
@random-username this is the setup i use in my house, the only difference is that i have setup static routes to apply qos even if someone connected to my DSL router wifi and not through DDwrt.

first plug the Ethernet wire to the WAN port of the 841n and setup your router exactly as in the pics

the internal IP is now on a different sub-net than the main

in this one only choose Gateway disregard the static routes.

if you didn't change anything in the networking tab you should have internet no problem at all.

@TheStunMan you are right public VPN and high download doesn't work, you still didn't enlighten me on how is an R8000 better for him than his 841n?

man i have a tl-wa830re and i flashed a wr841n v8 dd-wrt firmware on it and honestly even if i have a pppoe running with 2 V-APs and crazy routing and QOS the router handles it with a max of 20% cpu load, and ping time to router doesn't exceed 1ms
Thanks DNA your method work like a charm. But I'm still having issues with the VPN. I follow the instructions word for word, but all of my traffic is still going through my local IP. Did I screw something up or did you have the same issues? (This time I tried VyprVPN PPtP)
