hey guys,
so i'm looking into building my first gaming rig, it will be for 1080p gaming only, no higher resolutions whatsoever. Also i'd like to keep my FPS at 60 FPS or higher. Will use PC for some rendering and CAD work too. give me your thoughts :
CPU: i7 4790K
GPU: GTX 970 or 980 still confused
motherboard: MSI Z97 gaming 5
RAM : 16 gb hyperx savage
thermaltake 730W SE power supply
the rest is not as important
so what are your thoughts ? And one more question please, where should i get my GPU from ? All the stores i've asked that are close to me have absurd prices.
Thanks in advance !
NAM

Well don't bother asking in Lebanon for the 970 or 980 .. just ship it from amazon through "dot.com.lb/DHL/ARAMEX" any of those will do the trick. Go for 970 from amazon as it gives you all you've asked for and more to spare for 340$ and a free witcher 3 download code.

Get a GTX 970 or a Radeon R9 290X, and don't get an i7 4790K, save a few bucks and get an i5 4690K, it performs the same in nearly all games and, ironically, better in games like Civilization V, use the money you saved to buy a better cooler and better PSU, go with an EVGA, XFX, Seasonic, Antec or Super Flower unit.

Wouldn't the i7 perform better in CAD and rendering tasks ?
Die_Kapitan
Yes but he said it's mainly for gaming and he's doing just some CAD and rendering an i5 will get the job done, if he was mainly doing CAD and rendering and some gaming I would have suggested an i7.

Macrotronics is listing the GTX 970 for 440$ on their website, is it a good price or should i buy from dot.com.lb ?
As for the processor, i think the 4790K is the better choice for my needs as well as is more future proof.

@Jaydee $440 is pretty much the cheapest 970 you can find in lebanon, and even if you wanted to get it from Amazon ($340) , ARAMEX is going to charge you a crap load on shipping, TAX, and duty, and you end up paying a price close to the retail price of $440. I bought mine for $460 (MSI) , i say pay a bit more and just get your card faster and hassle free with warranty from the shop itself.

You got yours using aramex ?
Anthony2000
nope, PCandParts.com
Jaydee
Anthony2000 wrotenope, PCandParts.com
When did you get it ? I've been checking for a long time now and they've been out of stock ( N/A indicated ) since i've known.
Anthony2000
I got it back in January, got my hands on one of the very few left, and they have been out of stock since. These things were selling like crazy

@Jaydee 440 USD with VAT is Good good for it now.
Jaydee
@techguru i'm going to go with the gtx 970, and SLI it later on, especially when directX12 comes, then it'll be a 1080p beast with everything maxed out
tech-guru
@Jaydee Ok ; But I do not prefer to SLI since single graphic cards solutions are better overall especially Nvidia announced Pascal 1 year from now it will be market , better to stick with the 970 now for a year and on since its worth enough on 1080p Gaming (High/Ultra High Settings with 2-4x MXAA) even on 1440p (1440DSR in case on 1080p Monitor) High Setting with FXAA ; as more titles are in the horizon 1 -2 years even with the release of the Direct X 12 (Windows 8 / Windows 10) one 970 GTX will be enough for 1080p - 30-50 Fps ; do not think of 60 Fps on demanding coming AAA titles even on 1080p or you need to drop with graphic setting fidelity (Mainly AA). Here is my justification why not to SLI and wait for Pascal Release and Upgrade using a single card setup:
The new architecture will also include 3D memory, which will provide up to three times the bandwidth and nearly three times the frame buffer capacity of Maxwell GPUs. By reducing the memory bandwidth constraints, which limit the speed at which data can be delivered to the GPU; developers can build larger neural networks and accelerate the bandwidth-intensive portions of deep learning applications.
Pascal will have its memory chips stacked on top of each other, and placed adjacent to the GPU, much closer than previous architectures. This reduces the distance that bits need to travel from memory to GPU resulting in accelerated communication and better power efficiency.
This is in addition to up to 32 GB of memory — 2.7 times more than the newly launched Nvidia flagship, the GeForce GTX Titan X. One of the most anticipated features of the new Pascal architecture is NVLink – Nvidia’s high-speed interconnect, which links together two or more GPUs — which should increase the gains seen from the increase in available memory and bandwidth.
NVLink allows for double the number of GPUs in a system to work together in deep learning computations. In addition, CPUs and GPUs can connect in new ways to enable more flexibility and energy efficiency in server design compared to PCI-E.
The technology will allow data to move between GPUs and CPUs five to 12 times faster than they can with today’s current standard, PCI-Express. As deep learning, big data, and data-centric computing become ever more prevalent, increasing the memory bandwidth will dramatically improve performance of data intensive applications.
Jaydee
@techguru that sounds awesomely awesome, lets just hope the prices'll be reasonable. I think with DX12 and the VRam stacking possibility and better SLI usage, 970 SLI will be really future proof. We'll have to look at 970 SLI VS equivalent pascal card performance and price wise, then one 'll be able to make a better decision don't you think ?
tech-guru
@Jaydee Yes Better to do an apple-to-apple comparison on Performance/Price Ratio between 970s SLI and Pascal Performance ; but the features will be a winning value for example Maxwell GPU architecture like the Voxel Global Illumination , MFAA , Efficient Energy Consumption / Hear Dissipation over the previous Kepler Generation. Pascal vs Maxwell will be more revolutionary for NVidia due to the following reasons:
- first NVIDIA GPU with 3D-memory and NVLink
- supports up to 32GB of on-board memory (2.7x the frame buffer capacity of Maxwell)
- 3x the memory bandwidth of Maxwell (it could be first-generation HBM (with up to 640GB/s bandwidth) or second-generation HBM with unprecedented capacities and north from 1TB/s bandwidth)
- 2x the performance per watt of Maxwell (will be made using 16nm FinFET process technology, therefore, expect increased count of stream processors, and higher clock-rates in addition to architectural enhancements VS 28nm on Current Maxwell)
- new feature: mixed-precision computing
- 4x the mixed-precision FP16 performance of Maxwell
- up to 10x the deep learning performance of Maxwell
But as you have pointed reviews/tests will see the performance boost - Therefore for a year or so stick with one 970 before you chose of whether you will upgrade to SLI or a new architecture.
Jaydee
@techguru that mixed precision computing is a killer feature for me as i rely on CAD and rendering, let alone all the other features !! Looking forward to pascal
Die_Kapitan
I don't think Nvidia will include HBM memory on any card except on the GTX 1080 *cough* p *cough* (coincidence? I think not).
Anthony2000
I was thinking of buying another 970 in the future and SLI'em until this whole 3.5 gb vram thing popped up. Not looking forward to it anymore unless directX 12 can really add up vram in SLI, then SLI 970 would have 7 gb vram... hmmm... Definitely something to think about.
tech-guru
@Anthony2000 SLI does not add VRam - the data is mirrored so you only get 3.5 + 500Mb VRam form the 970 ; and by the way the 970 is facing problems on 4k, you can still have one 970 on 1080p or even 1440p until the Release of Pascal where you can upgrade after a year or so from now.
