Blood and gore are not elements of a good horror movie, this is exactly what the Americans are selling nowadays, they accommodate their horror movies with "big production" (as in blood and gore of course) just to make up for their lack of genius and originality. Most of the latest American horror movies seem as they were produced in a fudge factory. And so I second you the.gamer.
I am big fan of horror movie myself as far back as I can remember, this is probably why I couldn't beat my nyctophobia completely.

one of the best horror movies i've seen
Interesting of you to mention this movie: This is the first "found footage" movie that could actually fool the audience for a while that it is an actual real found footage of a dramatic terrifying story. And then tons of other movies copied that idea to fool their audience; a famous mention is the "real" found police tapes from the 2003 "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre". God knows it fooled me for a while.
For the time being I will highly recommend:
- White noise (this will haunt you for more than few days not because of its scary scenes but because of its scary new concept)
- Drag me to hell
- 1408
- Dead Silence
- The grudge
- Rec (2007)
- Evil dead (2013)
