  • CoD 4 problems hosting a game

Hey guys,

Nice to finally post something, I'm a newbie here and there isn't much to say (Your average tech junkie and all that's implied).

To get straight to the point, I recently purchased cod4 from steam to play against my friends (they have macbooks and it's the only decent fps for dual platforms) I used to be able to host the servers and everything ran as smooth as silk up until my router's antenna failed (LAN ports kept working) So to avoid going to Beirut to buy a new router from Ogero and have it configured I decided to buy a regular router (TP Link TL-WR740N) and connect it via LAN and properly configure it. Most games run fine online apart from cod4 where I can join but not host. Whenever I host the IP that's displayed is a small variation of my local IP (192.168.1.9:28960)

We've tried everything from connecting manually to this IP and trough the one from whatismyip.com since the server won't show up on the master list.
I tried disabling the firewall but to no avail, I even tried direct forwarding the ports and still nothing!

Your help is much appreciated, thank you in advance guys!

Assuming you have made a bridge configuration (and not having a different sub-net for each router) and the game still doesn't work, You have two options:

Option 1: port forwarding: This can be found in most routers (forwarding->virtual server in your tp-link router). Set trigger port to any port your friends want to connect to (assume its Z). Set incoming port to your local port (28960) and save. For your friend to connect to you, they should connect to y.y.y.y:Z (assuming y.y.y.y is the IP-address on whatismyip.com).

Option 2: DMZ: This can be found in most routers (forwarding -> dmz in your tp-link router). It gives your PC the IP address of whatismyip.com if Ogero is giving the IP address of whatismyip.com to your router.

Note: If your router doesn't have the IP address of whatismyip.com then it is impossible to host a server if cod4 developers didn't configure a NAT punchthrough with an external server.
Port forwarding might not be your problem.

I, as a Cyberia user, had issues like this in GameRanger. You have to call them and tell them to place you into a certain group where you get some kind of dynamic IP address and not a shared one, then you can host games and player would connect via your IP.

The group was called 'Gamer Group'.

The router first router is set up for gaming, it worked fine and the settings are both set to dynamic IP, the trouble seems to come from the 2nd one.
If you can host a game when connected directly to your modem , then it's a port forwarding problem , and trust me I tried several times to fix it when setting up my webserver but it didn't work out.
you need to give your router a dynamic dns then port forward it in the modem , but the router always finds a way to ruin it.
That's the thing, both are set to dynamic DNS, and when I test the ports they keep saying that they're closed! (Tried opening all the specified ports but to no avail!)
The only solution I can think of is you need to buy a new modem (you don't have to get it from Ogero if you know how to configure it)
Here's something that the console keeps displaying after I try to host the game

WARNING: unknown dvar 'bg_shock_volume_weapon' in file 'shock/damage_mp.shock'

I've read almost every forum post online in the past few days. I'm going to re-download all 6,5gbs tonight since backing up and restoring the game isn't working.

I was expecting steam to be heavenly. A big disappointment so far

Thank you for all the help! @aliessayli2

Origin Is even a bigger disappointment Trust me I have BF4 and Fifa 14 and every time I format or try to fix a file , I have to download everything from the beginning.

You're Welcome anytime :)
