  • using 4G lte for gaming FPS

hi guys

you all know the INTERNET situation here in Lebanon , and how hard is it to play competitively in FPS games like Battlefield3-4

i have tried cable - ifly and .. its all rubbish never get a ping under 100 and it is not consistent , in night during happy hours "free download" the ping start jumping to reach 300 or more .

i was thinking about trying 4G lte by MTC since no free download and not so many subscribers it should be faster , i know the prices are too expensive (85$ modem and 3Gb/month at 60$ !!!) but i am willing to do that if it will be a game changer like 60-70 continuous ping .

please if any one has experience with 4G , reply and tell me your thought , i do not want to pay premium and get nothing new in return/

peace
Have you tried a 3G dungle ? I have been using one for some time now and besides the fact that you won't be able to catch a signal anywhere you want its speed is fine,I get pings of 80-70 at all times. The price is quite high though but not as high as the 4G deals (5 Gb/month at 75$ from WISE)
I got 150mb and once i had about 50mb left before they expire in a few hours and i decided to run BF4 online. I went through the 50mb within 30-40 minutes of gaming but i had great speed and relatively low ping between 65-80. So yes its doable but feasibility is something else. I am talking about 3G and not 4G

If you game 2 hours a night i would guess u would need around 5GB a month on 3G/4G

Usually i run BF4 fine from a cable provider around salim slem. Most of the time my ping is within 60s but what i suffer is crappy download speed every now and then. Basically i game around 2 hours a night with 95% of the time problem free.
thanks a lot for your reply guys , i will try 3G these days and see how it will perform , 70-80ms ping is enough for me . but again you are right i would need 3-5Gb permonth for gaming . using TCP/ip viewer i get around consumption 100mb/hour of bf4.

and maybe if ogero and isps solve their problems and 4g dongles become cheaper i will try 4G

again thanks
peace
I suggest that you wait like 2 months, because the minister of telecommunications just stated in a conference that in the next month or so he will greatly improve the internet speeds and quota, even saying that fiber optics are almost there. He may be just making promises that he won't keep but you never know.
lets wait and see , but i doubt that a major change is going to happen ! its all about the politics

by the way for anyone how is facing the same problem , i have tried 3G wise using dongle , it is really disappointing , and not worth it !

the pings are improved so i know have 90-120 for German servers , which is good , but the thing is that it is not consistent most of the day , probably during rush which is from 9 am to 2am !! so it jumps during game-play to 400-and 900 , it is worse than IFLY.

maybe because of wise (the isp available bandwidth) or is this a general 3G problem , i do not know i will leave that for the technical guys ..
or maybe BTS traffic (the amount of people sharing the same 3G tower with me)? i wish i could know wtf is going on in this internet infrastructure .

I don't think fiber optics would significantly affect gaming.

fiber optics WOULD significantly affect gaming, among many other things.

Well to be more precise they would be greatly decreasing pings which in turn significantly affects gaming (Oh and the better download speeds would just be a welcomed bonus)

higher download speed is welcome if they go the extra mile and provide bigger INTERNET bundles or unlimited , otherwise we will be spending the our monthly quotas in minutes
Everything is here, it was an article posted on the networking forum :

Mr. Harb said his next project is to work on a lump sum monthly payment for Lebanese internet subscribers, allowing unlimited online sessions (rather than the current system in which they pay for their time spent online), similar to what has been available in the West for the past 20 years.

Mr. Harb also acknowledges that he probably won’t accomplish nearly as much as he wants during his short allotted time at his post. “I’d like to implement Law 431.”
4g is the fastest internet right now , I used with a router at home and i reach speeds of 40 Mbits/s and even more sometimes.
Its because the service is relatively new and the antenna is feeding few users so you are sucking most of its bandwidth.

thank you for the reply i was waiting this kind of feedback from a user , so do you recommend it? , and do you think the ping will be better or have you tried gaming on it , by the way where do you live (Beirut , dahye ...etc )
I'm not a user, but of course it greatly improves everything in the internet, Though the prices are too high and the connection is not ideal.
