  • Handheld GPS for fishing

A relative of mine loves fishing in a small boat and has asked me to get him a handheld GPS unit that he can use to save a certain fishing spot, and recall it later.

I am not too familiar with GPS and how it works.
1- Any units available for under 100$?
2- Does the unit need the map of Lebanon? If yes, is it easy to install it?
3- I've seen on the net some units with built-in sonar (expensive though), has anyone seen any dealer for those in Lebanon?

Thanks for your replies.

Satellite triangulation.

Maybe. Note that marine units typically cost more, they must be resistant to saltwater, splash-resistant, etc.

What would a map be useful for if you only want to save the location of a spot in the sea?

PS: I think my iPhone can do that... save a spot using GPS. Most Android smartphones too, I guess.
I have this gps for fishing. So you're looking for something similar. You might be able to find a smaller gps for under 100$, but probably not in Lebanon.
I don't remember what the map really looked like on that gps, but you won't really need a map of lebanon. You just need a map showing where you currently are and where your saved locations are.
The sonar feature you're looking for usually requires installing a sonar piece under the boat if I remember correctly (the sonar thing usually comes with the product).
Thanks guys, you've been very helpful.
