  • Over the top electrical bill?

Anybody got this? Happened to me with the past 2 bills. How is it possible that a normal bill averages 80,000L.L. and all the sudden, you get around 400,000L.L.?

It's nothing personal, happened to almost everyone else in Dekwaneh / New Rawda area. I'm not complaining, just wondering if it was the same for people in other areas.
If it happened to everyone, then there's something wrong. It can be rectified by contacting EDL.
Heading there tomorrow, will let you fellows know how it goes.
Check your counter (usually under the building) it is quiet possible that you've been stolen, it happened once to me.
If your counter shows a big amount of kW then it might be true.
You could cut electricity off your house then go down to check the counter if it is still turning with a good speed, then it also might be true.
Update:

@NuclearVision, we checked, seemed OK.
I filed a complaint, they said everything checked. But someone said that 2 companies are now running billing, khaskhasa, and there's a big mess. Every area will go through this very same mess once or twice till things get precise and right.

They explained something for me that wasn't very clear for me, something about consumption and rates. Anyway, they said they would deduct around half of the bill for now, postpone pay for 3 weeks, and the deduction will be paid on several installments for later. Doesn't exactly make it right, I'm still screwed, but I guess it's easier to pay this way.
That makes no sense, the bill has a section which identifies the consumption rate and how each price branch is consumed. The full prices are there and so are the fees payed for each, there's no way they can mess with the consumption rates since it's standardized and posted on the bill as well, so the counter determines the rest. If they did mess with the consumption rates, it should be visible on the bill and you'd be able to identify the anomaly.
Look their might be a flaw/neglect in the billing system which I think happened to me as well. We know for a fact that the first partition of kilowatts costs 35 LL while the last costs 200 LL. If the collector logged late on your counter, instead of paying for 60 days, you paid for 90 days or more and this means for this extra 800 KWh consumed (for example) you are paying the highest price + 10% (TVA):

800 => (200 * 35 LL + 400 * 55 LL + 200 * 80 LL) = 45000 LL
While on highest partition pricing
800 => (800 * 200 LL) = 160000 LL
160000 - 45000 = 115000 LL + 10% TVA = 126500 LL

This neglect will cause an increase in your bill of 126500 LL

That's just my two cents
@guitarer is right.
Not all your consumed kW cost the same. But anyways 400 000lbp is quiet high.
3 months later
Our recent electricity bill came today, it was for 140 000 LBP.
and 2 months before that, it was 180 000 LBP.
Note that our usual bill before costs like 40-60 000 LBP max,we do not have no ACs,no Hot water, no Electric warmers and such.

The 180 000 bill a couple of months ago, we paid it.
Today, the 140 000 bill, we refused to pay him, he told us go check your counter number and go to the company.
Which is what were gonna do.
My aunt in bourj hammoud also had a bill of 400 000 LBP, and she paid it!

@Nabs,
so you still paid the 400 000 LBP bill after all? divided in months...?
It happened with me also from like a month ago. Called EDL, bulls like always..
I guess we were billed for several months which explain what happened.
on each visit the collector must check the counter and note down it's value,some times the collector notes down a virtual value because he can't get access to the counter (closed room or such) or because he is just too lazy to do it.so let's say the counter was on 10,000 kwh after a month the collector notes down 10,100 kwh without checking the counter,while the actual counter is at 10,200 kwh so the next month you get billed only for 100kwh not the 200 you spent,after few months of adding virtual values you might have like 1000 kwh difference between the actual counter and the value noted down,so when the collector actually checks the counter he will note down the actual value which will make it seem like you have spent over 1000 kw in one month.
and like guitaret said,since your consumptions in one month is that high you will be charged about 200LL per kw which will result in a very high bill.
