  • Stereotypes about university majors

Hello everyone!

For the past couple of years, I've been constantly hearing that engineering and medicine are the only 2 majors that can guarantee for you a good future, and that they're the only 2 majors which enables you to become successful in your life; since both of these majors are considered the most "professional".
Does this stereotype apply in Lebanon? If I pursue one of the above majors in Lebanon then I will be set for life? And if I pursue other majors in Lebanon then I won't?

Thanks for your replies in advance.
You can be an engineer and live like shit.
You can be successful with any other major.

Success doesn't depend on your degree. It depends on a mixture of hard work, discipline, curiosity, good decision making, and a bit of luck.

source: I'm an engineer.
Well, if you want to make a "career" as an employee, then it does depend on your degree too, from what I see and hear so far.
Well it depends on what career track you plan to go through, and in which region in the world, and if you have a passport other than the Lebanese one etc.

You're technically good to go with most majors in Lebanon, but it will be harder for you to find jobs in some, and the pay would be different. Obviously a computer engineer will be paid a salary higher than that of a computer scientist. And a computer scientist will get a salary higher than that of a film making major. (Speaking of starting salaries in Lebanon).

Just like rahmu said, you can be successful in any major you choose if you work hard enough.
Even with all the corruption and wasta and all that shit, if you work hard and produce high quality content/work, you're set. It might take time for your work to get the recognition it deserves, but it will. I haven't met a single person that was really good and passionate about their work that wasn't doing good.

So pick something you love, something you love so much you would even do for free ( don't actually do it for free though :p )
It's something that you're gonna have to spend endless nights working on, I cannot stress enough the importance of picking something YOU LIKE. Stereotypes are bull, they carve out the basic topology of the work environment but it doesn't mean a thing.

Whenever people ask me what I do for a living I tell them that I'm an animator, they think that I entertain children at parties. A lot of the people that start all this stereotyping don't even know that animation is actually a profession. Some months I make upwards of 8K and I don't even have my masters yet. I'm not saying this to brag I'm saying this to tell you that no matter what you do, no matter how unconventional your choice of profession, If your work hard enough and maintain your passion for what you do, it will pay off.

Don't listen to these stereotypes, especially if they float around Lebanese universities. Everyone thinks his or her major is the best way to go, better than the rest.

Cold truth is, depending on what you want to do in life, you'll need a specific major to accomplish it. Check the internet, not "the zoo."
You can become rich without a degree.
It depends on how you go on with your life, not waiting for someone to hire you.
