What's the currency for?
Currency is all kinds of orbs in the game starting from the smallest form of scrolls [scrolls of wisdom] up till the super rare mirror of kalandra. Some are rarer then others and some more valuable then others, the rates are mostly community determined and not just by their rarity drop and each league has different rates/markets. The orbs are used for crafting but it's more like gambling honestly, so feel free to use transmutation/alteration/augmentation if you need a certain stat badly while leveling up the first few levels as they are very common.
So. we simply use the currencies as an exchange rate for items, and note that nothing has a fixed price.
You'll learn the rest as you go really, explaining everything now will just confuse you.
PS: Just keep in mind not to get addicted to spamming your orbs on your items or you'll find yourself broke in no time.
I never bought anything from vendors, and I muted the trade chat since it's spam to me.
Check all vendors[including all difficulties once you start unlocking them] every time you level up, and purchase the
Chromatic items. Chromatic items = 3 Linked sockets each of different color.Vendor them after for a chromatic orb, this orb is more valuable then what you buy the item with unless it costed 2 alteration orbs which is the only time you shouldn't buy one.
Trade Chat is a spam fest mostly.
And what do the different leagues represent?
Leagues are all distinguished from one another, meaning you can only interact with other players/characters from that league itself . Your Stash is also shared across characters in only the same league(i.e. A character on standard can't party up with a character on hardcore.. An item on standard can't be shared through stash to another league). Whispers are the exception as it's account bound.
-Standard league is self-explanatory. However it is also the dumping of all other leagues(thus having a messed up economy).[read below]
-Hardcore league is similar to Diablo, Torchlight hardcore leagues where you have 1 life. However, the character doesn't permanently die but is actually transferred to the parent league(Standard league).
-Domination/Nemesis are the 2nd 4 month leagues in PoE. Anarchy/Onslaught were the first during the 2nd phase of Open Beta. 4th month leagues are fresh economy where everyone starts from scratch with no items in their stash. They also have extra mods affixed to them. Domination league acts as a fresh standard league with the addition of
Shrines. Nemesis acts as a fresh hardcore league with the addition of
Added affixes to some monsters.
-Race leagues are small temporary leagues where everyone starts from scratch as well. The goal is simple, survive till the end achieving highest level possible. Races are "usually" very small hardcore leagues with the usually time limit being between 1-3hours. Some are very short(i.e 8mins), some are very long(i.e 1week/1month). They are usually part of seasonal events with reward points which you can check on the website. Note, that each race has distinctive mods to it and rules. The "usual" hardcore rule means that you're character will be transferred to Standard league and will no longer be part of the race, survivors will be transferred to Hardcore league. note: Some races fully revamp the game such as Ledge races or Descent races, when the race ends(or you die) the character will exist in a Void league meaning, they will be useless and can only be deleted.
Still so much to learn :P
We all started somewhere and the game is based on community work, hence the lack of tutorial.
