riqmarmes wroteI will have to disagree with this one guys, dual 650ti boost SLI outperforms the 7970 sometimes, and it costs 374$ with VAT... The thing is, if I buy a 7950 and OC it, I might get the same performance as dual 650Ti boost SLI, but don't forget that I can also OC the 650Ti's, and I WON'T buy another 7950 (we don't want to put more money than this), We decided to get another 650ti because its not that expensive for the difference in performance when you get 2 of them... I have a 470gtx on my desktop and I can still max out most of the games, and a single 650Ti boost which has 2Gb compared to the 1280mb should do better when running most games.
What I'm trying to say is, either I get a single 7950 that can max out most games and stuff, or get 650Ti boost SLI which is cheaper and does better than the 7950. (In 1080p only, trust me 2GB VRAM is more than enough, and my brother doesn't mind reducing graphics settings if he has to: he's been playing on a laptop with a 9600M or the macbook pro with a 9400M, barely able to run any game...)
And for some reason my brother doesn't want to get ATI cards (lol). So getting a 670 is too expensive or getting 660Ti is extremely weak (and also has 2Gb VRAM) compared to the 650Ti boost SLI.
The PC he is trying to get has to be good at rendering and working with audio and so on, and the i7 does way better than the i5, so I wont go down to an i5.
He would have been ok with a pc that can run all games in the lowest settings.
But I'll have to make sure I get a good case, and I'll need stronger PSU for the SLI.
Thanks for the help guys.
You can't put multi-card configurations against a single card configuration. 1 single card is always always always better no matter what the case is. It's all about scaling. The 660Ti beat the 7950 as a single card when it first came out, and at with 2 of them, it was as fast as a Titan, now a 7950 can very easily beat the 670 and when running two of those card, it even beats a Titan for the same price. Not all games scale equally, your cards might run well with current games, but will suffocate with games in the future. You're throwing power draw, airflow out the window to have 2 slow cards that
might run well with the game you want, but in a few months, those games will perform as bad as the 660Ti did later in time, because just like the 660Ti,it lacks memory bandwidth. Performance constantly change after every single driver update. And usually AMD flies with more performance while Nvidia is sitting in one corner eating glue.
Multi-card configurations are nothing but problems waiting to happened. By spending less on 2 slower cards you're spending much more on PSU, Case and Fans. Why not keep things simple for your brother and get a single card which will eventually beat some silly card in one driver update (It probably already has, the new 13.8 drivers just launched)
Why doesn't your brother want AMD? He wouldn't notice anything anyway. You might as well get an AMD card and paint it green and slap it inside your PC, nothing will change. Nvidia has been having tons of drivers lately with their new 320 driver, some cards are even being fried, whereas AMD has been nothing but improving, they recently fixed their CFX Stuttering issue some people were having.
I am an Nvidia fan boy telling you Nvidia is very over-rated, they're selling cards which are meant for you to upgrade in a year or two, whereas an AMD equivalent card is setting you up for a decade, for the same price. If you haven't noticed, 90% of new builds are using AMD cards now. Including myself with my 7970, my friend got a 680 classified for 600$, I got my card for 399 and it beats it by a long shot. Don't look at FPS performance reviews anymore, those things are very inaccurate since drivers change constantly. Games don't show a card's full potential.
Like I said before, going SLI you're spending about double on PSU, double on case, double on motherboard. With that money you might as well get a 670 or a 7950.
VRAM has already become an issue, what do you expect from a year from now? Loosing textures? Why would you, when you can buy something that doesn't let that happen?
I don't even think the 650Ti even supports SLI. I think the Boost version only has it. And the boost edition is probably more expensive.
You're also spending 80$ extra to save 5 seconds in rendering.. Just saying.
