Hey guys,
Yesterday I bought a new sony hd tv, model BX45, and I already have an old sound stereo system that supports 5.1 dolby technology.
The thing is there are some connections incompatibility, and I actually dont know how to describe this due to lack of termonolgy but I will try my best:
In my old sony stereo model LBT-GV10AV have the following inputs/outputs on the back:
-phono
-MD
-Video
-Dvd input
On my tv there's bunch of inputs and some other connections not sure what they are:
-Y
-Pb
-Pr
-And mono left right which I thought that will work but didnt unless I am missing somrthing.
Also available is a headphone out which I read that it can be the solution I am looking for except that it doesnt support 5.1 surround, am I right?
What should I do to make the best out of my system?

I advise you to take a picture of the inputs, also state the model of the Sony Stereo.

i experienced a similar problem, what do you want to connect it to, the tv or the dvd/blueray player ?
you should have an audio out on your tv in rca plugs, the stereo should either have a jack in or rca in called AUX, that way you'd only be getting 2.1 tho, i doubt your stereo has 5.1 input, usually old stereos that can take discs output 5.1 channel thru their cd tray/VCD not from an outside source, again as kareem said provide a pic please.

Yes I doubt that there can be 5.1 rca outputs from your TV. Your gonna either consider outputting 5.1 from any player Dvd or BR that ur gonna add to the system.
The only way you'll be able to output 5.1 surround through your TV is through Spdif, which I'm sure your new TV has.
the problem is where to find the necessary cables.

new tv's don't have rca outputs, they only have a headphone jack ehich is 2.0, as spdif its only input if im not mistakrn, again provide a pic of both your tv and stereo plugs

I am at work and I cant post a pic for you guys, and in my house I'm still don't have internet except as mobile data on my phone.
I already mentioned all the connections, and further to more researching I can confirm that the only audio output is the headphone output which is stereo.
Updates regarding the manner is that I subscribed to OSN which supplied their OSN Showbox, and I made connections from the latter to the PHONO inputs in the sony stereo and it worked however noises were present, especially when there are a loud scene, so I switched to MD input, and the sound is better now but I am still not getting a full surround but I think that is the best I'll get from my set up.

dude, just take a picture with your phone and upload it using either 3G or when you get a wifi connection from another place and upload them from there, we may be able to help you further, neither phono nor md are the proper connections for what you are doing, phono input decreases the bass and increases the treble, that is why you are getting noises on a loud scene! i am not sure about the MD input tho, but im pretty sure it is altered too, aux is the only untouched source.

We can't guess from the connections you have mentioned. They could be named differently from what people are used to.

For example you mentioned these: YPbPr which should look like this:
.
Since your Stereo is old i doubt there would be a S/PDIF audio input, which was available even on PS2.

the Y Pb Pr is for Video Signals only, these 3 has nothing to do with Audio. while using YPbPr video out put one generally uses component audio (not 5.1).
the ports you have mentioned as Inputs sounds more like Modes i.e: you have 5 different sets of L + R Audio inputs at the back of your stereo which are select-able from the front end as to which device you want to listen to.
As proposed earlier one cannot help you unless you manage to put up a Picture which shows all the Inputs of your stereo. on its capability of playing 5.1.
That being said, the 5.1 sound has nothing to do with your TV. A general surround sound setup will look like below:
Blu Ray Player ------>hdmi cable-------> Surround capable audio receiver (amplifier) ------> hdmi (video pass through) -------> HD TV

Audio to Speakers
hope it answers your question.
