I am on the verge of ordering one from pcandparts, however I am pretty much hesitant about it. Surely WD is one of the best at manufacturing HDDs, recently I read some feedback about it dieing after 2/4 months, based on the amazon customer reviews, there is a lot of positive feedback but still there are some significant amount of users reporting the same problem, the HDD starts making clicking sound and dieing on them, others are reporting a faulty USB cable. I know that it can die in case you drop your HDD, some mentioned that they were always handling it carefully.
It is not just about it being a waste of money, what I am really afraid of is losing all my data stored in it. Now if someone is already having this product for a while, please post your feedback and opinion about it, whether it is a good or a bad purchase.

I got one last year. Last week it died after the third drop.
Good overall if taken care of.
I recommend it

I think cables in the new models are ok. I've bought more than 20 WD externals so far, 2 died. But as with all hdds, all will die sooner or later I'm sure. I always backup my data on 2 externals for peace of mind.

I am not sure why would they eventually die if you were careful and make sure not to drop them. I am leaning towards sticking to burning my data on high quality DVDs. Seems unreliable with external HDDs.

DVDs are more unreliable IMHO, except for stashing. A few scratches and they get damaged. If you stash them, then you could do the same with an HDD, although you could never be sure that HDD would spin up and show your data when you plug it in.

Just because 1 product has been bad for someone doesn't mean the product is bad. That's just bad luck. Millions of these drives are being sold. There's not a single product on this earth that has no bad reviews. All products will have a bad seed in the production line. If it happened to you that's just bad luck. I'm sure the manufacturer will happily replace them.
I've used the 1TB version for about a year. Unfortunately it got thrown to a wall and hit the ground while it was working. It still worked through the day though. WD External drives are very recommended by people. They last almost forever. And remember no matter what kind of hard drive you buy, even if it's the world's best hard drive, it will die eventually by extensive use or by dropping it. An average life of a hard drive is 5 years.
Also, you should ALWAYS backup your data.

@AvoK95, I fully agree with you there, WD without a doubt is a good product. Anyways I ordered the 1TB version, hopefully I won't accidentally drop it and it won't die on me anytime soon as I always take care of my stuff, be it delicate or not.
Thanks all for your opinions.

The part where they said it comes with a bad usb cable, i think the actual problem there is their usb ports not having enough power to make it work, it cannot spin up with low power thus it starts to tick, be sure not to use usb extensions and plug it in the motherboard port instead of front case ports for the best power, or you could just buy something like this and plug it wherever you want.

@shant, I will be using it mostly on a laptop, so I don't think that I'll run into such a problem.
The HDD arrived today, backed up more than 130 GB of data and it didn't even get warm. It is a sturdy HDD with a sturdy USB cable. I am satisfied with the product. I'll be extremely careful with it since I'll be trusting my data to it for now.
