  • Pixma printer with Debian (+Virtualbox issue)

Good afternoon,

After being empty for a quite long time, I have recently refilled my printer's cartridges. The time was so long that during it, I at least made a switch between two Windows and three Linux operating systems.
And now I'm pretty determined to stay with Crunchbang, that being Debian with some friendly sausage.

The problem I am facing is that the computer is ignoring the printer, as if it was never attached. Way to be mean.
The printer is a Canon Pixma MP150, a three-in-one. Note that its scanner works using the simplescan programme.
I searched for solutions on the Internet, and thus found these two:
1- Install and configure CUPS.
2- Use the printer under a Windows OS in a virtual machine.
Of course, the second choice is nothing but a dead-end withdrawal of the issue.

Using CUPS
That being so, I installed CUPS, went to localhost:631. I clicked on the Administration tab, and under the headline "Printer", I clicked "Add Printer". Here, I was prompted to type a user-name and a password. I typed my normal user-name and password, and got a "Forbidden" message. After some Internet hunting, I found out that I should get in as root. So I typed "root" as user, and the password. But it doesn't work, the box keeps re-popping-up every time I hit OK, asking for the user-name and the password once again, with no error message at sight.
And I think I'm just stuck here.

Can anyone help me with the issue ? It's pretty humiliating to ask for my sister's Windows 7 computer every-time I want to print a file.

Virtualbox solution (and nVidia issue)
In a matter of urgency, I booted up the virtual Windows XP machine, as the clever idea of printing from within it came to my mind (I read it on the Internet). All good, I arrive to the Windows XP boot screen, and once it's done loading, the screen is black for ever. Clearly enough, the problem comes from the fact that during my last successful use of it, I didn't have the nVidia drivers installed. F*ck you nVidia !
In Virtualbox, I tried modifying some preferences and ticking check-boxes back and forth, such as 2D and 3D acceleration, in vain.

Additional information will be available upon request (and legitimacy).
Cordially,
Adnan.

PS: the way the computer doesn't recognise the printer is that no software shows the option of printing using it, I guess you already know that.
