Hi all :) So the thing is, I'm a third year computer science student. I've always thought I'd get a masters degree, but lately I've been wanting to try other stuff instead. I love programming, but I have an artistic side I want to enjoy. So I'm thinking about getting a couple of books in the summer, practice some serious programming, then study graphic design next year. I know as a programmer web design would be more logical. So the question is, is it a plus to have a graphic design degree next to a CS degree or is it useless ?
Graphic design + Programming

Welcome to the forum killerqueen. Well actually if you love designing user interfaces and demonstrate a great talent for that, combined with good programming skills you can end up with a pretty powerful skill-set. You can also specialize in designing user interfaces/experiences and develop them yourself. Startups are mainly interested in such people, they're referred to as the designer who codes.
BUT, university education may have very little to do with all that talk. This is mainly because a CS degree may not necessarily end up teaching you programming or even everything you will need at work. And same goes to graphic design, also it depends on the graphic design program and what it has to offer.
Just out of curiosity, which university are you in?

Thanks for the encouraging link.
I'm at LU. I'm probably gonna study graphic design at LU, too.
Also, I understand what you're saying about the degree thing, that's why I'm gonna study in the summer, because I've relied only on what they gave me at uni for the past three years and I regret it.

Just like Ayman said, there's an increasing demand for designers who code nowadays. A web designer is not really a graphic designer. A web designer is a person who knows how to design user-friendly interfaces, translate the design into HTML/CSS markup, and use some JavaScript code to bring it to life. Not much programming is required from the web designer's side. But strong command of HTML/CSS is definitely a requirement.
My advice is that you wouldn't waste your time seeking another degree in graphic design or anything related. Just grab some books/screencasts/tutorials off the internet and practice on your own. Make sure you master HTML and CSS and dig deep into user experience and how to create interfaces that will make users love you.

That makes sense but I just find it more fun to actually study it in uni, and I'm gonna make sure it doesn't stand in the away of my programming time.Kassem wrote My advice is that you wouldn't waste your time seeking another degree in graphic design or anything related. I am someone who went all the way to a masters degree in computer science, but still wish I did graphic design. However, when I figured out that I enjoyed drawing more than coding, I just hoped I'd fall in love with coding later on when I start working. That wasn't the case sadly. So I say if you feel like doing graphic design, go for it, of all the people I know, very few enjoy sitting 5+ hours coding for the rest of their lives, so if you don't want that, I suggest you do what you love.
Badieh, that's kinda what I'm afraid of. By the way it's never too late you know if you have the talent.
