Hey guys,
Can somebody give me some insight on which would be a better purchase purely for university use?
Tarek
None ..get a laptop
better keyboard , better performance/price , easier to fix , easier to wipe and format , easier to find the software you are looking for ,
a decent I3 or I5 laptop with a wireless mouse and you are set to go

to be honest, I think you're only considering the wow-factor instead of actual practicality, so far no tablet will make it easier, laptop is better, do your self a favor and get a good built quality laptop with core i3 or similar chip.

You can get an HP SleekBook with an i5 3317U, 4GB of RAM, 500GB HDD with a 2GB GT630 graphics card. For $700. I think it's a waste dumping such money on a tablet.

This is becoming way too boring to justify. Yes a laptop has a better keyboard, yes it has a better performance relatively to its price and yes it is way easier to fix. But not one laptop is as practical as either the Lenovo ThinkPad Tablet 2 or the Microsoft Surface Pro, especially for a University Student. Not only are they practical to hold, they are also extremely practical to use for daily applications.
No matter how sleek, thin and light an ultra book is, it will NEVER be as easy to carry around each and every day on campus. All the Negative Nancy s have most probably never tried using them.
Now to answer your question:
The Lenovo has an Atom processor, which means you cannot run CPU-intensive applications; however, that provides you with a better battery life. Whereas the Surface Pro contains a Core i5, which means that you could use it as any normal laptop; however, that comes at the cost of battery life, which peaks at 5 hours on a single charge.
The Lenovo has a resolution of 1366 x 768, whereas the Surface Pro goes full 1080p HD.
The Lenovo is thinner and lighter, and has no fans, whereas the Surface Pro is a bit thicker, heavier, has fans, and runs somewhat hot.
Also, the Surface Pro's keyboard is also more practical and feels less "plasticky" than that of Lenovo, however Lenovo are famous for their keyboard's typing experience.
Finally, it all comes down to price and speed. If you wish to have a full blown laptop experience, go for the Surface Pro, which will naturally have a higher price point. If you wish to have a 'closer to a tablet' experience, go for the Lenovo Thinkpad Tablet 2, you'll save on your pocket and get a way better battery life.

Why can't we simply answer the question? OP has clearly made up his mind on getting a tablet and gave 2 specific brands to compare. Not whether you think he should get a laptop. Not whether you think it's worth the money. Not whether you think tablets are cool.
I am ranting here because it's getting increasingly frustrating to get a useful answer on LebGeeks. Most answers are opinions that, more often than not, don't even answer the original question to begin with.
- "How can I do X?"
- "You don't want X. You should do Y."
- "Y is so stupid."
- "I really like Z."
This is happening way too often. Can we focus on being helpful?

because i tried both laptop and tablet as a university student, and the tablet only won in convience when it comes to reading pdfs that's it. Doing researches, making power point presentation, typing are much easier on a laptop, and these are the most tasks done on a computer device as a university student.

Did you try a regular tablet, or a tablet running Windows 8 Pro ?
Metalloy
I did recommend the surface RT on the other thread, I liked it and I can see him use it as a student, but the pro version will be really expensive and with a really short battery life, at this point he's better of with a regular laptop which will have a better typing experience for sure.
I'm enjoying windows 8 on my laptop right now, great OS and I know that touchscreen will help and make it even a better experience but I honestly can say that I don't feel like missing something, the touchpad is filling the gap nicely, gesture are easy to use and very handy, same for windows keyboard shortcuts.
So as a conclusion, if he really wants a tablet, and just for using office suit and internet, surface RT is the obvious choice, otherwise, a laptop is much more reasonable.

Hi guys, I'm sorry my post is a wreck, I feel like a complete mess. Thank you all for answers I read them all and took all into consideration. I'm 90% convinced on buying the Surface RT but I just have one question. Does the RT support web based Java games such as Runescape? I called Virgin megastore twice and one employee said yes and the other said no .. I cannot find a decent answer on Google.
Anyone have a clue?
Thank you

Exactly! 90% of threads doesn't reach solutions, it only has opinions and recommendations that everyone sees is good for him and doesn't help the OP it only confuses him and makes it more hard to make a decision. I think you are all right that tablets are useless compared to laptops in terms of performance and price but the OP likes to get a tab so its better to advice him on which tab to get.

What can people give other than "opinions and recommendations" ? Facts? How do you know that these supposed facts are not subjective, at least we need a ton more information from the OP to even try to answer... Even if we link to reviews they are also opinionated. "Useful" is subjective as well, very. Thank you for correcting the OP's error and suggesting a laptop for university work because my opinion also is that none of these tablets will cut it. Hope you take that advice into consideration jad594, full fledged tablet tech is still pioneering, too early now.
Answers:
a) Thinkpad
b) Surface
c) Both
d) Neither <- This is my answer.
This is just like asking: Which VGA is better for 3dsmax: Nvidia XXXX, or ATI YYYY... And we know how such a thread will go if we do stick to the original question.
Metalloy
It is not just in lebgeeks, it is in every forum, when someone has a different answer that he knows it will suite the OP more he'll say it. I was thrown off my choices many times in a guitar forum, because i simply didnt know best at the time and my choices were not exactly the best choices.
