badbyte wroteGood morning, hope that you had your coffee. :)
I know why you had see this as a bad example cause I got my point cleared out here.
Now if you have some Hardware laying around that you consider as obsolete like the Core2Duos or Quads, let me know. I'll buy them off of you for 10$ or 20$ no problem.?:)
Do you do any case mods btw.?
Like I said before
AvoK95 wroteWhen you have a Core2 Duo machine that satisfies you, there is no reason to get a new one.
In the beginning of the post you were suggesting a guy who has a $1200 budget to get a used Core2 computer. Am I the only one who finds this retarded ?

Don't get me wrong, Core2 series were awesome. But they had their time and their time is over. So unless you still have one that satisfies you, there's no reason to get a new one. But if you DON'T have such a computer lying around, there's no reason NOT to get one.

I got 2 Pentium 233MHz computers with each of them having 64MB of RAM. I can still browse the web on them just fine with Linux/Windows 98. I can even play a few games on it just fine. I also have a 900MHz Celeron PC with 512MB of RAM and an ATI All-In-Wonder X800 256MB VGA card. I can play Crysis 1 on it at 20FPS (Due to huge CPU bottleneck). I can always use these computers, they run just fine. Their problem is that, they're just slow, and considering today's standards where you can get a full working laptop/desktop PC for under $300. I don't see why should frustrate myself to work on such old slow hardware, when I can get something very fast and that being cheaper than my TV or phone.
Ok, I see that you never set up a firewall, webproxy or some sort of server. If I'm wrong thenI wouldn't be surprised that it would be a MS Windows Server 2012 or something like that, which requires hardware.

I apparently expressed myself in a wrong way. The reason why I pointed out to a Core2-XXX was to save some money under the assumption of different aspects of the user. Aspects like private or professional use which is the main criteria in this case.
The discussion went off topic and now we are here.
BadByte, the OP never asked if he can use his existing machine, or if he can save money by buying old tech, or if he will be making old hardware useful.

The OP asked if he can make a New Rendering Machine, for the sole purpose of rending by using Autodesk 3dMax. so I am sorry but your point is Invalid from day one.

I think it's a great idea to use such computers as firewalls, because you can whatever junk you can find and it will still run. But, when it comes to someone who wants to buy a computer. I'm completely against the idea of buying or using used hardware when there's new hardware for the same price. If I buy used hardware, there's a chance of something going wrong and at the end of the day, it's your reputation on the line, because it was your recommendation. I'd rather put a few dollars more and get new hardware and have nothing to think about something going wrong. Even something goes wrong, I'll always have warranty to cover my back. So, I have nothing to loose at the end and my customer/client will be more satisfied.

Again, when it comes to stuff such as firewalls, file servers, proxies, I don't see any reason to buy new hardware that will be far more expansive and do the same job. CPU's can last forever, and there are certain motherboards (Like my Maximus V Formula) can last up to 15+years due to high quality components, even though the manufacture's warranty is only 3 years, the product is made to last far longer.
If you offered me used hardware I'll buy it from you due to your honesty. :)
Btw. I enjoyed our discussion and hope we could meet someday...

We do IRL Meetings. They're quite fun, we all meet up and have random discussions and a chance to meet each other in person.

Also, you can check this topic to find used hardware. I don't think they're all clean, unless the person specifies what's wrong with it.
badbyte wroteLOL, you should attend a meeting when BSD and GNU developers meet. This is epic...
Nah I'm good XD
