Hey guys, whenever I download from AUB, here is what they send:
AUBnet automated monitoring system has reported that large downloads equal to
3600.77 Mbytes were made using your AUBnet account between 2012/11/25 and 2012/11/27
etc etc....
Is there any way I can stop them from knowing how much I'm downloading or this message does not really matter? Or any other solution that you guys might know?
Thank you.

I have received this message 2 times till now and nothing happened really but I don't know how to prevent them from knowing how much you downloaded

Not possible to cirumvent the accounting system as far as i know. Last I knew, it was a part of the proxy iteself. As for these messages, when I was a student I got many of them and nothing happened. Although at some limit, someone might contact you or suspend your account. If you're doing something against the policies, you might get a dean's warning. So be careful and space out your downloads.
riqmarmes
Ok, thanks a lot.

the policy is no more than 1gb per night. at least it was like that when I was in dorms.
Padre
there are ways to circumvent the proxy, but im not at liberty to discuss them. Just keep digging :)
crazy
I don't know if something changed now, but a few years ago at night and w-e there were no limits on downloads/uploads... only during the day. Maybe things changed?
riqmarmes
It is free quota during night and vacations/w-e, but they would still send you an e-mail if you download over 2Gb.

A simple vpn will do the job.
Padre
there are even easier ^.^

@Padre
What do you mean by circumvent the proxy? If by circumvent you mean bypass blocked websites, I think that is easy and not a problem. But I want to "hack" the quota settings on my account, or find a way to stop them from knowing how much quota I am using, and in my opinion this isn't easy at all.

yeah, i doubt it is possible to do that. But I did hear from a friend once that you can pay an extra fee and get a less restricted account, try asking the IT department.
riqmarmes
Paying isn't a great option, and I'm sure that if we find a way to circumvent the accounting system it will be a lot better than what they might offer (if you can buy 750mb for 10$, so what will it be? a small offer for 100$?)
babum
it's just that I don't think it is possible to circumvent their system. I mean ultimately they regulate all the data that goes in and that goes out of the university.
maybe hacking into the proxy server but that would just get you closer to being expelled.

Dudes, as long as you're using their gateway to access the internet, they know how much you're downloading. Using VPN is useless; heck it makes things worse. You need internet to open up a VPN; if you open up a VPN session using their gateway, the meter can still count how much traffic is going. You simply can't beat RADIUS. If this is the system they are implementing (which I think they are), then authenticating to the Wifi will create a session at the RADIUS server. From there they can know how much every person is using; they can even know if you're online or not (at any moment of the day). I have worked with RADIUS and believe me; don't waste your time :)
riqmarmes
As I thought.
Here's another thing that I would like to ask: We have a 4gb quota limitation per month. I heard that there is a way to make your quota reset every time the limit is reached or something like that. Is that possible ?
Edit: I tend to think this is more of a glitch if it exists....
Padre
Let me just put it this way: "there are unmetered channels"
You don't "hack" into their system to change the quota or whatever.
I never heard of that glitch though,

As far as i know, as long as it is free ie. you are downloading at night or over the weekend, they will send you emails but will never take any action. The proxy is like a warning system and nothing else.
