Greetings.
So i got Dota2 on steam lately, i won it for free .. took me a while to download it because the download rate wasn't stable .. going from 0 bytes to 100kb/sec then 200 then dropping to 0 bytes for 1 minute and the opposite. So when it was installed i wanted to check it out (that was after i rested my laptop for like an hour or so). I connected to steam and all that and i joined Dota2 .. takes 45 minutes to finish one match of Dota but 30 minutes passed and the laptop became hotter every minute even though i rested it for an hour so it cools down. Then all of a sudden the laptop crashed and turned off. The hard disk wasn't making any sounds (just the normal laptop sound when you turn it on). I turned it back on, it gave me an error saying the PC shut down and some other stuff with 2 options:
1-Safe Mode (to retrieve data i guess)
2- Continue normally
I chose continue normally since i wanted to find out what happened. I decided i'd do something else but the laptop didn't crash. I tried entering Dota2 but i faced the same encounter.
Laptop Specs:
Acer Aspire 5740G
CPU Intel Core i5 2.27 Ghz
4GB Rams
512 MB VGA
What seems to be the problem ?
Ngel
Any game report of the crash ?
any error at all ?
did you try the Event Manager , software part ?
MrClass
Perhaps graphic card driver problems? Make sure you get the latest graphic drivers

I'm kinda addicted to dotA 2 and my sessions usually range from an hour to 12 hours and I didn't encounter a similar problem like yours
My laptop specs:
- Acer core 2 duo
- 4gb Ram
- 1.7 gb VGA Nvidia
and a cooling pad
its either the VGA or the cooling pad, probably the cooling pad
NajaLB
@Ngel: No error at all .. what's the Event Manager ?
@Mr Class: At first i thought the VGA are too low or causing problems but i checked them and the driver was updated (latest version)
@Jinx: I don't have a cooling pad.
Sidenote: Where to get one ? price ?
Gamer
I'm not sure, but it sounds like either the motherboard or the Hard Disk got damaged.
Was the laptop dropped, or some sort of shock was administered to it.
Did it happened again, besides Dota2?
NajaLB
No i never dropped it, it's always on the table since i got it ..
And no didn't encounter any until i got Dota2 and only when i play it .. 30 minutes pass and then crash.
Gamer
Found these 2 sources that might address the issue, Not sure if you checked them)

But apparently you're not the only one with this problem
Jinx
You can get it from any Pc store and its around 20,000L.L, If you can prevent your laptop from heating I think you'll be able to run the game normally
And don't forget to clean your vents..
MrClass
Try to run the game with the lowest graphic settings. I know the game will look like shit and you won't perform as good as with the better graphics settings, but give it a try and see if your laptop keeps crashing. Now remind us, the whole laptop is crashing as BSOD or only the dota 2 application?

@Gamer: Thank you i'll be checking the links a.s.a.p.
@Jinx: Thanks mate i'll be getting one , hope it does it's job well
@Mr Class: No no , when i run Dota2 on steam and i start playing it , 30 minutes pass and the laptop gets really hot then crashes (turns off)
Sidenote: It only crashes when i enter Dota2 , i tried several other stuff but it functioned normally

What you are experiencing is usually caused by overheating.
Download HWMonitor, it monitors the temperatures of your laptop's components. Run it and enter your game. Then every 5 to 10 min, Ctrl-Esc and record the "Max Temperatures" caught by HWMonitor and report back here.
If indeed it is an overheating issue, you will have to clean your fans and might even have to change the thermal paste.
HWMonitor Download Link:

@Leonedes: I downloaded the program and just like you said.
I entered Dota2 and every 5 minutes i was checking the MAX Temperature of the Intel Core i5 , isn't that what i was supposed to check ? (Specify please) Other temperatures were normal but the Intel Core's was between 88-91 then turned to 96 and at that instant i closed the game.
Is there anything else i should do ? (within the program or other)
And should i send the laptop to a PC shop or something so they can clean it up for me ?
Sidenote: If the crashes were from the Graphic Cards , how can i reinstall the driver ? (It is updated to the latest version)

Well there you go, these CPUs tend to shut down between ~ 100 and up to 110 C. What was the temperature of the GPU?
In any case, you mentioned the laptop has always been positioned on a table, is there a tablecloth on that table? Now this isn't the main reason for your problem at all, but those seem to collect more dust into the laptop. Also, are you sure that nothing is blocking the ventilation openings of the laptop?
NajaLB
I didn't check the temperature of the GPU and no there is no clothing on the table .. it's a table made out of smooth wood :P
Well, i kinda found out what the problem is (in any case of overheating not just during Dota2). The vents should be cleaned from dust that's all and i should probably renew the thermal paste.
I don't think the Graphics Cards have anything to do with it. My specs are way beyond the game's level.
I'm gonna send the laptop to a PC shop (friends' of my dad) and they can take a look at it and i should probably buy a cooling pad. That should be the solution.

Well, most laptops has one heatpipe assembly that cools down the CPU/NB/GPU, and 96c is extremely hot, your CPU has a built in safety called iTM "intel thermal management" that will shutdown your CPU once it reaches it's Tj.Max "witch is 105c for your i5-430m CPU"
This function will save your CPU but wont save your NB "NorthBridge Chip on your Motherboard" and wont save your GPU, they are heating up because they are on the same cooler..
2nd, each CPU has tow limits, the first called t.Case and the second Called Tj.Max, I told you what is Tj.Max up there but for the T.Case, it is the maximum safe temperature for your CPU "witch is 72.4c for i5-430m" and any thing between T.case & Tj.Max (72.4c & 105c) is where the CPU throttles it self and where CPU's lifetime reduced..
if the heat pipe assembly can't keep your CPU below it's T.case, clean the vents, if that doesn't help send it to a professional service to replace the shitty thermal compound used by manufacturers and reseat the assembly, then you'll notice a huge drop in CPU/NB/GPU temps.

Much appreciated, but i already fixed the laptop for him.
Thank you for your time
