Hello, LebGeeks.

I recently bought an HTC One X, and i'd like to root it, so I can access a wider range of apps. I plan on staying on the stock operating system for the time being.

Some questions :

1- What is the best rooting guide, for a noob ?

2- Will I need to backup my phone contact list and apps, and how do I do that ?

3- Supposing I root it successfully, will I be able to update the stock operating sytem legitimately in case a future update happens, as well as all apps necessitating updates ?

Thanks
1-there is many way to root the one x,the easiest is a one click tool here,
and this manual guide which is not completely for noobs (you need to know about adb and how to run commands)
but the best and the hardest way would be unlocking the bootloader via htc dev and going through the whole process manually,it's the best since other are based on exploits while this is official method and will work even after software updates, and here is anhow-to

2-if you used one of the two methods (not unlocking the bootloader) you will keep all your apps and contacts
if you unlocked the bootloader all data will be wiped but you shouldn't worry about contacts they are synced with your google account so when you sign in with your phone after rooting, your contacts will appear, just check that contact sync is enabled in settings and contact are synced with google (this is the easiest way but you can do a backup to the sdcard also, there is an option for that in contacts setting)
backing up apps without root is possible but you will not be able to keep their data,i think astro have an option to back up apps without root but with no data.

3-official roms is the last thing you need to worry about when you root, when htc release updates there will be RUU and stock cwm flashable ROMs and if you are planning to stay with the stock rom with root only, you maybe still get ota.

Thanks a lot.
I would like to add one more thing ..
Of course you will try the easy way , and will work 90+ % , but just an info , not all HTC phones' bootloaders can be unlocked , i know because i got my HTC One X few weeks ago and when i tried to unlock the bootloader , the device wasn't found on the list , unless there is another way which i doubt.

Some other ways:

1- Download SuperOneClick , any version i suppose the one that suites you or the latest one and check the tutorial on HTC forums.

2- Download z4root on your mobile and simply clicking "root" , of course then rebooting your phone in any case.

Both of those ways failed for me , but give it a shot !

PS: Unlocking the bootloader may lead to bricking your phone and making it a piece of junk.

unlocking the bootloader and rooting this way will give you cwm that means you will be able to flash roms ,you can install cwm after rooting with one click tool but you will have to use rom manager and that could lead to a serious brick(ask avok95 who suffered from this),plus there is a user fault in almost every brick so just be careful and know what you're doing, and about the list thing just chose "all other supported phones".
anyway use any method you want, they will all get the job done, but i prefer having an unlocked bootloader myself.
@m.sabra

I tried this tut you posted , i followed every step , but when it reached double click on root.bat while enabling USB debugging and plugging the phone into the PC. The CMD started working and rebooted my phone like 2 or 3 times but it didn't work .. any thoughts ?

the first two links are based on exploits so if you updated your phone or if it already came updated they will not work since the exploits would be patched.
that leaves you with the third method which you don't like :P i still recommend it but try finding another way if you want.

My phone came updated i guess 4.0.3 and i updated my HTC Sense so ..

I tried every possible tut but nothing worked out [SuperOneClick - Download SuperUser - z4root - this one]
You mean unlocking the bootloader ? If that's the one i'm having trouble with it too.

The steps aren't very clear which frustrates me even more ! HTCdev.com
