I registered a domain, now what

I thought this may be such a common question people here may be asking themselves, that I could share with you all.

The first thought that hit me, and it's not interesting, is that I already have a blogger account, so I can link it in. LinkedIn, facebook, twitter could follow. I can place an always up to date CV as well. Then what? Collapsing all the thoughts I've ever had into a single reality is kind of depressing.

I should make my $20 that I spent on a domain (from Namecheap, which proved to be much less hassle than the monstrosity that is GoDaddy.)

I better find decent hosting. For all the time I have spent in the domain, I don't really know the hosting fields, and I can easily be educated. I guess this could be good chance for that. I've used a GoDaddy hosting service before (a huge nono) and Amazon and Rackspace cloud servers. They all served their purposes pretty well (basically close to no loads).

You could get a .com from mydomain.com for $7.5 only. I bought 5 domains last month and I go 25% OFF on the total order.

As for Webhosting you can try http://www.simplexwebs.com/ (They use Litespeed and hosted in UK) I tried them before and they have fast servers (SSD).

Or you can even try www.hawkhost.com I use it at the moment, it's very good and fast.

And you can check http://www.hostxnow.com/ I tried it for few months and it's OK.

It all boils down to a simple question: how much sysadmin do you want to do?

Here are some fun tasks you could try:

- set up a mailing server and offer a web mailing client.
- (bonus) make it so reliable you can host your actual email address (me@arithma.com for instance)

- Have a (semi-)public git/svn repo.

- Set up a Wordpress and/or a wiki.

- Set up a mirror for your favorite repo.

For hosting, I cannot suggest anything, but can offer help with Unix (that's what you'll most probably going to get anw).

Also, an online host give more interesting tasks.

- Set up a back up system for your desktop.
- Monitor your system, database, resources, anything with Nagios.
- ...

000webhost is truly a great service(FTP,PHP, mysql databases, emails, 1GB storage, 100GB/mo bandwidth...), indeed i've been using it for two years for three domain names,
you can sign up here, this is my affiliate link(referral).
Once you sign up all you have to do is change your name servers(from the registrar site) to the nameservers given by your hosting service. TIP: Do not buy hosting service from registrar, they offen are too expensive, i once bought website tonight from godaddy, and some crappy hosting service, never used it.
By the way, you can get free domain names here regardless the name you choose, the domain will always end with .tk, and you can change nameservers to 000webhosts', in this case you'll get free domain name+free hosting= free fully customizable website.

BTW, I registered a bunch of domains with namecheap, but then ran into a bunch of problems. Namecheap doesn't handles domains such as .uk, or others - I think it's good for the regular .com, .net...
The problem I had is that the order would silently fail and I would had to contact support, and their interface was very slow. Now I prefer GoDaddy, but I'd never host with them.

No one said anything about Google's AppEngine, Heroku, AWS, rackspace or whatever else the new cool kids are using.

@rahmu: Mail is hard to pull on one's own especially that it's a people/corporate problem rather than being a technical thing.
The repo idea resonates a little. The wiki as well. I'll try to have something up there worth of monitoring before I actually do any monitoring :).

@rolf: GoDaddy simply hurts my eyes real bad. It's probably the worst thing I have experienced ever on the web. I prefer to look at Geosites.

One cool thing to do: host your email at the domain with Google Apps. The nice thing about having your email
be at your domain is that you can switch email hosts whenever you want.

rahmu's git/svn idea is really cool too. I want to add that you can also use the domain to host an OpenID, so you can always log in to OpenID-enabled sites from that domain.

You can also publish your public PGP key for whenever you want to do secret spy stuff :)

These are basically "storage" servers like a CDN to fast your files. AWS is for file storages. Google AppEngine let you host your CSS and JS files.

Rackspace is a cloud hosting but I don't see a reason why would you pay for that. Cloud hosting is for big companies, usually e-commerce sites. They can't live with downtime.

However if you are keen to try could hosting go to Vidahost.com you pay $1 for the first 3 months for a cloud hosting (you can enable windows and linus) on the same account. I've tried it before.

$5 a month, very fuckin awesome compared to shared hosts, I'm on the 2nd month now

ofc it's not the best hardwares ever, but if you're a starter or not expecting lots of traffic, it's perfect, and you get 2 dedicated IPv4 to use however you want.

You also get to compile your own server (apache, php) and install whatever you want, and if you get bored, install squid and make it a proxy server (not sure if that's against their TOS)

I spent like a week messing with SSH and apache and php commands.. cool things to learn.

I have a VPS from http://buyvm.net/ it's hosted in Canada so everything is allowed :) I installed torrentflux and I use it as a seedbox :) but they're out of stock now. Usually they say on Twitter when the boxes will be online, I remember I waited like 3 hours to get the VPS. They sold 100 boxes under 5 minutes. Crazy!

AppEngine just a CDN, what the hell mate :) Guess you're pulling stuff right out your arse.
AWS: Amazon Web Services. Cloud server costs $10 a month for a decent build. Best of all, can turn it off/on on demand. Dedicated is for no-downtime. Cloud is for scaling.

There must be a more scientific way for comparing hosting. I am sure these must have been done before.
