My S2 gave me a new update notification around 1PM.. which was weird because I tried to check for a software update every now and then and it seems like my phone couldn't connect to the server (I was on 2.3.4 looking to get 2.3.5) it just never worked.
I pressed update.. the package was around 240mb. The downloading/updating went flawlessly and voila! new lock-screen.. I knew it was Ice Cream Sandwich cause I saw the lock screen on youtube several times. Went to Settings/About it was now Android 4.0.3 and the Kernel version is now 3.0.15 (up from 2.6.35)
Phone is faster.. loving the new settings feel/usability

And what does MTC have to do that? Isn't the update feature built in the phone itself? It is not like carriers here offer subsidized phones with their contracts and pack a ton of services around, quite the contrary, they pack a ton of scams, a cute bunch of charlatans, you gotta love 'em for it
Joe
@MTurk: This is great news! I have the same phone and Orange (my carrier here in France) still hasn't sent me the update.
@proners: Unless you root your phone and install it yourself, the only way to get an upgrade legally is to wait for your carrier to send it to you.
MTurk
Exactly - it doesn't mean that MTC modified anything, although some carriers do, it just means that somebody at MTC allowed the push of the software update to your phone at a time when most subscribers worldwide are still waiting for their carriers to push it.

I dont think it was MTC, rather that today or yesterday ( Im not sure) Samsung offered the official ICS update to international cellphones, meaning all factory unlocked cellphones that do not come from a carrier.

I think this makes more sense. I am in total disbelief that such a courageous step would be undertaken at MTC or alfa for that matter, i hope i can be proven wrong
@rahmu, ain't this a more plausible scenario?
@MTurk, was it an OTA update ? or did you update via Samsung KIES ?
Joe

Oh yes! Silly me, I did not think of factory unlock phones. (In my defense they're almost inexistant here in France. I mean I got my SGS2 for 70 euros).
I checked MTC's website and they made no annoucements. If it was indeed something they did, they would've bragged about it.
MTurk
I stand corrected, it is exactly that; my phone is indeed factory unlocked so that makes more sense. I always had to wait for a notice which means my carrier pushed it.. but being that this is my first unlocked phone that makes more sense.
It was a OTA update Proners. I just tried it on my sister's phone, also a galaxy s2 but alfa, and it worked. Just went to settings/about/software update. Had to create an account before I proceeded and it worked flawlessly.
So carriers have nothing to do with it.. finally ICS!
mezin
MTC has nothing to do with it, when you hear that carriers push the updates it means the carrier the phone was purchased from and not the carrier the phone is currently on. Seeing as MTC does not offer price reduced phones on contracts, then they have nothing to do with the phone

i have an unlocked gs2 with arabic support (it is a midle east device) and i still can't get the update, i have 2.3.5 and i'm still stuck...... :( how many of you can confirme ics on the s2 ??? and what versions do you have ?
chosen2k
All middle east devices are still on 2.3.5

Samsung jordan said the update will be released before may, samsung lebanon says it still needs a months or so
Shockwave
because samsung lebanon wants to take advantage of this months, and keep making 44$ out of every software update.....

In both cases, TouchWiz is so freaking ugly. Simply root and install an AOSP or AOKP custom rom.

This. Installed AOSP v8 on my Note. Incredible stuff. ICS-based, of course. But there are still a few bugs to iron out. I'm guessing these bugs will be ironed out with the official ICS release on the Note. But on the S2, the update is already available. So I'm guessing AOSP / AOKP may be more stable on the S2.

I got ICS and Nova Launcher (free from Google Play) installed which is similar to the ICS launcher, and it is extremely stable. TouchWiz makes the S2 look so outdated.
lellozz28
what about phones that are officially imported by samsung lebanon (CTC) ?
Shockwave
phones with the ctc warranty card can have the ics for free, just pass by ctc, other lebanese phone have to pay 44$ or wait another months for the update
m0ei
Fuck Samsung Lebanon !!! For god sake, they take 44$ for a free available update. WTF !!! I wouldn't pay them a single dime even if there weren't any other way of getting the update.
Just root your device, install a custom rom, enjoy the full Android experience and forget about this shit.
hussein-berjaoui
Dude, MTC has NOTHING to do with your device. It's an Android update, and the Ice Cream Sandwich was officially released for Samsung Galaxy S2 just like any other update.
