Remember mIRC? The software that people used to spend hours on daily, chatting to total strangers? Whatever happened to that? Is it dead or has it been replaced or what? People have been recently asking me for it's latest release like crazy, after years of no one ever mentioning it. What's up with that?
Has mIRC died or been replaced or what?
I think it's still alive but not as popular as it was before.
probably replaced by facebook, twitter and company ;)
http://www.mirc.com/news.html last release in october 2011. I wouldn't say dead :P
Nabs i think you're a bit confused. IRC is a chat protocol, mirc was the most famous Windows client. There are others.
IRC is far from dead. Admittedly most of the activity i find there is about development of open source projects but there are a lot of other channels.
But i havent come across the venerable "Hi asl plz" in a while...

Yes, Rahmu, it's the Hi asl plz thingy. Average users don't know irc, they know mirc, the Win client like you mentioned. It's been a while, but now it's heavily in demand. Also, Jadz, I don't think Twitter and facebook can replace mirc. You use irc to talk to strangers and discuss stuff publicly.
i used to get a lot of files from IRC servers ... i think a lot are still active ...
I still connect to Efnet, i am channel's operator there, (#lebanon)
The channel's owner is a registered user here I guess, the last time the channel was active was in 2007;
since that time we just chill with the botnet!
undernet and dalnet are more active than efnet, why? From what I heard, bachi in 1997-2000 the undernet and dalnet were listed on the top of the server's list in mIRC, I hope that's not the real reason...
