i have an external HDD which we were.mainly using it on windows, i tried to use it later on mac but apperently i cant, different format ( compatibility), but now that i have plugged.it.back to windows, a windows shows up telling me i need to format it! i dont want to lose my data. Can anyone help please?
Metalloy
i should also add that my hdd did on the ground by mistake and that is before i try it on windows again.
my hdd is verbatim 1 tb ( just usb plug no power plug).
Rubz
You mean you dropped it ?
Metalloy
yea i did, but it still works, i mean when i plug it the blue light turns on, and.the computer read it.but recognise it as drive F and not verbatim as it.used to.do
Rubz
Butter fingers! :)
Can you run a scandisk/analyze/defrag on it?
Metalloy
when i right click on the disk and click on propertied they say that type file is local disk and used spac.and free space are botj 0 bytes.
defragment is possible but i didnt run it, should i?
Rubz
I would.. as it will scan the disc and identify any bad sectors then defrag,
BUT- its not guarunteed that it will fix nythig depending on the damage, and you still may risk loosing all data. therefore proceed at own risk. and cross ur fingers..
Edit: Try error checking if you donot wish to run defrag
Metalloy
error cheking is not possible, and for.now.id rather not to defrag.

When an HDD falls it means it's dead.
Forget about your data.
You can try sticking it in a freezer for a few hours and run it to copy your data as much as you can.
Rubz
lol yeah, the freezer trick never worked for me though :(
Metalloy
but is is only 1 meter drop :s are you sure there's.no.other.way?
Rubz
1 meter drop can be deadly :p

Hard Drive failure symptoms.
You can also
try this to repair the partition.
Good luck!

Guys you're just lovely when you jump to conclusions. let's troubleshoot before we say the drive is dead, shall we?
metalloy, if you go to device manager, then click on disk management, can you see the drive there? If so, what is the partition type? Is the drive producing any clicking or grinding sounds? is the spin up sound the same as before? What type of surface did you drop it on? And what material is the hard drive enclosure made of? And did the hard drive fall face down or on its under side?
julien_saadeh
i dont think the hard disk is physically damaged.. It shouldn't be. I dropped my hard disk 4 times from 1m. It still works fine.

I have dropped mine numerous times and the only issue I run into is to fiddle around with where it is connected to the USB cable it gets back to normal. If you know someone, make sure the connectors are good and that may cure your problem.

Metalloy, plug it in and check if anything pops up in the hardware manager and disk management and get back on us please.
Metalloy
hey guys,
the device is shown on the device manager but not as verbatim, it is now a usb mass.storage device.
it makes no weird noises and seems that it is working just fine but the pc see it as a F drive with 0bytes free space and 0bytes used space, and if i try to double click on it a small window pop up and asks me to format it now.
devilsadvocate
plug in to another PC and see what it does there.

i tried it on my desltop running xp, laptop running vista, and laptop running windows 7, all share the same results.
