hello guys,i wanna save power, i have unlimited at night so i always have my pc on the whole night, so im wondering, is there a way i can keep my pc on low power and still download what im trying to download?
other than turning off the screen, like put my computer in sleep or hibernate mode and still download files? is there such a thing?

usually windows is smart enough and in general will go low power when it isn't on load
for example i nopticed my GPU clocks itself all the way down to some 200mhz when im not ina game or soing anything "flashy"
i suppose that downclock decreses power consumption.

windows has nothing to do with downclocking, its the power management of the gpu or cpu and that reduces power consumption.
Shant All you can do is turn your screen off

If you have a laptop, you can choose the "power saver" mode in windows. This will lower the cpu clock and thus lower power consumption. Not sure if this mode exists for desktops.

see, the problem is that my processor is overclocked so its consumes a pretty good amount of energy, as for power saving option, nop, not available because my ups does not communicate with my pc (There are some that do though)

^ windows - or most likely the hardware itself - decrements the cpu fsb multiplier when not in need. At least on my pc it goes down from 9x to 6x .. You can check it with CPUZ.
Plus, as for the power saving option, you can still use it even on a desktop with no battery/ups: just go to control panel and search for power options. There you can choose the power saver option and even go to advanced options to manage power to the USB's, PCI's, etc...

Buy a router with USB that are capable to do torrents for example. There is some.
If you have one with decent RAM and flash, and it is openwrt capable - you can do a lot of stuff there with much less power.

I guess turning off the screen and unplugging unnecessary equipment would do (sound system, printer etc...)
Also the CPU's fsb multiplier will be reduced when not on load. The GPU does that too.
But i don't think you can do more than that.
I am also looking for a low power solution for lengthy downloads. Linux on a beagleboard (or a low cost single-board computer would do) would be one heck of a project, use it for torrents or whatever.
Has anyone done this before ?

I'm not quite sure why you're trying save as much power as you can, but generally speaking, by turning your screen off, you are increasing the power backup power delivery from 2 minutes to 7 minute ( 1250VA / @ 600watts ). If your computer is Idle, the power consumption is minimal since CPU load is almost 0%.
In power management you can set the minimum CPU state to 0% instead of 5%.
You can disable Bluetooth in device manager if you have one and the Wireless button is for both BT and WiFi.
You can also turn off wireless completely and connect to the router using cable ( If you are obsessed with power saving )
If you are torrenting, some clients put the computer into standby/shutdown mode once the download is done.
Internet Download Manager for http downloads also has the feature to shutdown or suspend the computer when downloads are finished.

wouldn't setting cpu to 0% on idle decrease download speed?
well, getting a low power computer just for download is a good idea, i just thought of an idea, a kill switch for all the fans in my pc would be great!
to be honest, im not obsessed with power savings but its not something hard to do, so id rather do it, also im trying to be environmental friendly too (i know, its a joke in lebanon haha)
thanks for the advice guys, from now on i think ill put the downloads on my brothers pc and set it to power saving mode on battery
ibxoful
in the hard disk control set it to 0 and reduce all the other settings

the biggest power suckers at this point will still be your graphics card (even if its not being used) as well as those hard drives that are continually spinning due to the BT traffic.
note on the side , disable all screensaver or any graphical activity to prevent memory buffering even if screen is off.
( if you are a bit of a overclocker , use software to adjust your multiplier and vcore to as low as possible and turn off your SLI )

i don't have sli, i can't vdrop my core, it will get unstable, thanks though

I'm liking nuc's and flakks ideas!
I mean, I know what you mean shant, it just feels pointless to have a whole gaming pc sucking power all night just to dl torrents -- environmental-wise and hardware deprecation wise..
I think building the most minimalist of computers (running Damn Small Linux or something light of the sort) would be a great idea for long time runs for downloads.
Reminds me of old pc parts threads: we all have old hardware lying around with no use for it (me included)...

thanks for understanding, i agree, old computers might get useful, but still not green enough for me, as you know, old hardware are not as efficient as current ones, intel atom processors sound nice for a downloading computer
