Yep, took at least two courses where I had to use them, once for exploring them via microcontrollers (I remember it was the section "Different Bits" in the magazine "Servo") where I implemented the perceptron, back propagation, and the Hebbian learning techniques (the code was written with the CCS C Compiler) to teach a robot the recognition of street light colors and consequent navigation routes to follow, and another time when I implemented the character recognition on
license plate detection, extraction and recognition (code written in Matlab).
They're very interesting to explore, and easy to use once you get the hang of it. I highly recommend using Matlab for developing them cause they have a dedicated toolbox for that issue (higher accuracy and easier coding).
