Hi guys,

which one should i learn

drupal or joomla?

mainly for small cms sites which should be ready fast.

i already know typo3, but i just want it to use for big sites.

so any experiences?

thanks a lot
All I can say is stay away from Joomla, it's a mess. I never worked with Drupal.
I hate joomla.
I work with a custom made CMS.
Drupal seems to be pretty easy to use after about two days of clunking around. However, customizing stuff to exactly how you want them to be (especially adding custom modules and customizing existing modules is not a trivial thing and needs months of experience).
I don't know about Joomla though, so I can't compare. My impression though is that the community is larger, and the sophistication is deeper in Drupal compared to other products.
Joomla vs Drupal?
Java vs .NET?
Windows vs Linux?
iOS vs Android?
Vim vs Emacs?
...

The answer is still the same. Both are good, or else they wouldn't exist today.

My advice to you is to pick one according to how difficult it is to get help.

1- Do you know anyone in Real Life who uses one of them? If so, use this one, your friend will be able to help you.

2- If you don't know anyone like this, people here on Lebgeeks seem more familiar with Drupal and therefore are more likely to help so pick this one!

sure the question is like a standard question,
but if someone here has used both, i think he can give a good answer :-)
and yes its seems drupal is more liked by the lebgeeks :-)

No dude, I admire your philosophical approach, but Joomla is no good. This is nothing personal, I do not intend to contradict you or make myself look intelligent. Joomla is no good, it is a fact and it has the honor of being one of the rare certainties in my mind!

PS: Seems not everyone agree with me:

but some do...
"yucky" lol , drupal is and will always focus on the code over the design, thats what makes it such a solid cms and why it deters people *cough joomla* who prefer 1 step installs and pretty graphics.
Hello al_jamal,
If you already know typo3, you really don't need Joomla or Drupal.
But since you are asking, i'll talk about my experience.
You can say that i'm a pro Joomla designer.
Joomla is at first a little bit confusing, you will need to read the manual and apply the examples, about 1week (since you know typo3), but it is very different in the structure and logic.
The confusing structure, always at first, is the reason why some persons quit.
But i can assure you, from my personal experience with Joomla, that once you see the big image, you will love it.
IT'S VERY EASY, FLEXIBLE AND HAVE NOT LIMIT IN CUSTOMIZATION EXCEPT YOUR IMAGINATION.
THE LIMIT IS THE SKY! More you work, more you know, more it's easy.
The Joomla community is very large, active and helpful.
As for Drupal, i can say that it is very well structured, and the community is also helpful, that's all i can say based on my experience with Drupal.
Concerning the link post of rolf, it's VERY OLD (2005), and Joomla has made tons of improvements since then!
IT'S NOW TONS OF TIMES BETTER, and the other CMS i'm sure.
If you have any question about Joomla, i'll be more than glad to answer.
I love drupal. it's so extensible and there is a module for everything that your geeky heart desires.
@rolf, theres a new version out now since this month, joomla 2,5. maybe it is better?

thanx for your reply lebcit

Maybe, but I think the core is the same. I had a couple of bad experiences with Joomla, the last one a couple of years ago.
Joomla is huge and I could not understand how it is organized. Some people use hacks, stick plugins together and modify them a little to suit what they want... but it seems that to have a site with clean code, you will have to built your own plugin (I don't like hacks) and the documentation is not that great... I concluded that you're better off writing your own code from scratch.
From what i saw Joomla goes against my beliefs and my way of doing thigns when it comes to software development.
well, just installed my first drupal, lets see how its going :-)
