anonchi My parents live in Lebanon, and applied for 8mbps with cyberia. They added 4mbps as a second option. My dad got a call recently from cyberia saying that their phone line can't handle 4mbps. He didn't mention what the maximum speed it could handle is, but anything below 4mbps is too slow anyway. My question is this Their central office in in souk el garb, and really isn't that far from their house. Is there ANY way my parents can upgrade their phone line so it can handle these speeds?
mezin not really if they claim their phones lines can't handle the speed then it's an infrastructure problem in your neighborhood ... on the odds that their systems are off try with a different company but make sure they don't sell it to you and not be able to provide the requested speed ...
d3ad I highly doubt any company which will your Telephone Network would be able to do it, which means all DSL. because ultimately all ISPs will utilize same copper and same exchanges. there is also a possibility that the isp you contacted doesn't have bandwidth in your requested area to put on a new 4mbps, which I highly doubt because no ISP in my knowledge really adheres to this QOS mechanism anymore.
mezin anonchi wroteSo a different ISP would use different lines? Dont they all go through the same centrals? They do go through the same lines but I was suggesting to check if they other ISPs claim more than 4 mbps as a possibility
anonchi Cant I get them to install a new copper cable to my house? Wouldn't that be like setting up a new phone line to a newly built house? They really need to get on with the fiber optics project and join the rest of the world... The days of 1gbps are not far off, and we can't go on with this primitive infrastructure
TheStunMan You need to call ogero and ask them if your line can handle 4 mbps or not, maybe cyberia wont install this speed for many reasons (no one in your neighborhood has the same speed or another ip so they share it with you) it doesnt need to be true that your line truly cant handle that speed. You will get straight and true response from ogero but dont know how your going to do that, try to tell your parents to call them 1515.
The-MMMs i'll put it this way: Back in the day, i subscribed to what was once IDM 512kb/s After my application was put, and 2 months of waiting, IDM called me saying that they can only at best give 128kb/s - i cancelled my application with the very same phone call. (No possible double speed was available either) I called Ogero the next day, and asked (before subscribing) what is the maximum speed i can have, they said 256kb/s ... i explained what had happened with my situation with IDM - for the IDM guy wouldn't tell me why they would only give me 128 - anyway, i thought it's worth asking Ogero why - i was actually patched through to someone (forgot the name) and he explained a few legality issues and what not / i basically understood that they didn't want to give priority over to private ISP's and this was their way of killing the competition i.e. enforcing the maximum available speeds that other ISP's can have. So basically, there is an off chance that Ogero may very well be able to give you 8Mb It's worth a try, call them , and explain what you want, and if necessary what happened. You will get an answer, but basically your question would be more particularly about what is the best they can give you.
