not dead :)
Just a way of filtering people who are really interested.
I guess at this point it's you and I darklight555
Well, I was reading on free engines, and I found 3d very tempting... Unreal Engine 3 has a great deal for game developers who are starting out.
What do you think? That would mean that we do 3d instead of 2d
we would get the best engine in the market
and it would not cost us anything until we make more than $50,000 in sales
Personally I love 2d. But as long as I get to do the game as I described it, then I'm fine.
please tell me what you think.
Archonan i assume you do not have knowledge in producing content.
To actually model stuff in 3d it will take you a lot of time then you would need a 3d game artist animator and modeler then there is the issue of texturing.
If you are really interested start small like a small flash game then if you are compatible as a team and you believe you can still do something bigger then you can evolve.
I agree with @ZeRaw. Can't do anything significant in 3D without a 3D artist!
good point. I have actually worked with the first unreal engine, and did some 3d max series (and I sculpt busts in clay). But I actually agree in terms of man power, it would be much simpler to work small.

I was thinking of the game Outlaws today. I really liked the cartoon style of it. If we can achieve something similar, it would be great. We would also get all the people who have nostalgia for Outlaws.
Like I said earlier, I personally like 2d better and miss it.

Darklight, I am not a programmer, but I can code. I learned BASIC when I was 9 by myself, and Pascal when I was 19. 6 months ago I made a 1200 line mod in java for minecraft (had to learn the syntax while working lol).
But I personally would rather focus more on the general design + 2d art + music editing. I also would like to be involved in the story engine (I will tell you later what I mean).
And where do you see this project going? I mean what would be the outcome you think?
if you mean for the first project: a mini game of 'cowboy shootout'

if you mean by the whole big project: at worst: 1 mini-game
at best : a sellable alpha almost-full game (and we see where that leads)
I've worked on a few gaming projects, my advise is try to establish your pipeline with defined roles and tools to use, even if it's preliminary, you can modify it as you progress or as need be. Even when starting with a small game. Let each and every phase of your game take it's time. dont rush into producing something. The preliminary and design phase are crucial, dont try for example to just make characters. study them and give your character designers the space they need to come up with the characters you need.

Just my 2c :)

Thank you Padre. I appreciate the help.
Well, my main concern is short-term vs long-term issue.
I want to be able to start something that can develop into the long-term project, and not have to do everything from scratch. For example:
I've been trying to figure out which API to use for the game. I don't want to start something too simplistic, and have to redo that part in a better API. I don't want to use a crappy 'RPG maker' and make mario-like sprite graphics. If my end goal will be a 2d/3d game, I want to have it as such from the beginning.
I am starting to lean toward having a new BSD 3d-engine developer API, but have all the characters in cartoon like 2d. the setting would be in cartoonish 3d, but the characters would be drawn in 2d and animated in 2d.
That way, if I make the 'fight-scene' part of the game as proj 1, once that is finished, it will only require tweaking, since the work would be half-done for that section of the whole game.
But I'm thinking of starting everything in flash stick animation for starters.
I think it would be cool to design the game like that, and make the sequel in 3d/2d.
I dunno... as I said, I am torn between short-term and long-term.
I think I will need more thinking about this.

PS: the good part about the flash 2d stick animation is that it will be very easy to draw (for me at least)
When in doubt, ask your team :) it's all about balancing and ... well .... being happy :D

Watch Blizzard retrospective, that will give you and your people a morale boost :P
Good luck :)
