This is not about a paying job.
This is a call to any coders who are interested in making an RPG game.
We will start with a VERY small project, and see where that leads.
After all, this is the Indie games era, and who better than Lebanese to start making games?
If you LOVE RPGs, know at least one computer language (and able to learn a new one), love to work in 2d graphics, you're creative, you like to write music, you would like to see the first Lebanese RPG in the market, answer this topic.

I'm in for the music... Plot? Ideas? What do you already have (or don't)?
rtp
I would like too but doubt i have time :(. I'm already over scheduled...
My main language now is php since i work as a web developer but i know C/C++ as well learned that in uni...

great!
well, I don't have anything done yet. But the idea is to start together something small, like an alpha prototype.
of course, your role wouldn't kick in the beginning, but it is essential in a game (can you imagine an RPG with crappy music? unplayable!)
OK! One down, many to go!
I will write you details soon.

well, if the first project succeeds, we will need you later. Just keep an eye on us and see if this actually goes anywhere.

This is basically going to be C++ thing or what?
tigerheart-hackers
I can build an entire RPG game if we're talking 2D retro style, like the old Final Fantasy series. I can even build 2D beat 'em ups. PM me for sending me a test sheet.

It doesn't have to be.
This is to be decided later according to what we're trying to do exactly.
I'm seeing more Java as an option, if the idea moves to a second project and make it a multiplayer online RPG (not a massive MMORPG though...)
I myself am not a coder, but I can code (I can find my way in any language). I am more gifted in planning, art (visual and music - even music editing) and acting. But I obviously cannot do it all.
This basically needs free time. If you're passionate about it, you will be able to do it.

Do you have a sample?
Are you using any 'RPG makers' or are we talking about from scratch?
The first project will most certainly be 2d.
tigerheart-hackers
I've used RPG makers and I can go from scratch. If from scratch, I use a gaming language called Dark Basic Pro.

I prefer if i can help with the game coding instead of just stick to web development :P
but like I said, am not sure I can find time...
but i can try and see how things go

great.
Keep checking this topic the next few days.
I will post my first proposal of the RPG and see what you guys think.

wow... I've never heard of Dark Basic Pro. I will google it today.
Well, stay on topic for my next post and tell me what you think.
Question: do you have the complete iso Dark Basic Pro?

I am certainly interested in joining something like that. I believe Java would be a nice choice.
darklight555
I believe a 2D retro thing with nice graphic can be a good starting point.
tigerheart-hackers
Alright then, what's our starting point? And Archonan, yes, I do have the full program.
Archonan
@darklight:
great. I checked it out, read a lot about what people thought about it. Still didn't download it.
I think I will get it in a few hours to check out this weird 'dark basic' version of BASIC.
not sure we'll go in that direction, but if most of you prefer it, we'll see.
We need to find out what is the best API for our 2d RPG would be.
Archonan
Ok, first things first:
What do you guys think: Should we keep writing here, or should we have a private place to message each other?
Personally, I don't think anyone at this level would seek to steal from us any ideas, but for the future, would be good to have a private page where we could talk, or maybe even conference chat.
darklight555
I guess it's better to stay here for the moment... so we can gather as much input as possible. And once we have something concrete, we can move elsewhere.
Archonan
OK, so here's my brainstorming:
1 - I love open ended RPGs. I HATE linear ones (-a few rare exceptions). I DREAMT of some day playing an RPG game that is so open ended that it never has to end and has no limited pathways. You might think this is crazy, but I believe it is feasible (Minecraft did it but it's not RPG).
2 - Many RPGs have great elements, but there is not a single RPG that has them all, and in a very well balanced way.
3 - I LOVE the old 2d painted RPGs (all of BlackIsle like Icewind dale), but since Neverwinter nights, they were replaced by 'plastic like' 3d art (ex: MMORPG), or realistic 3d.
4 - RPGs have explored to death the medieval theme, the post apocalyptic (+zombies) theme, the fantasy theme (a la Tolkien), but I don't know any good RPG game that has explored the pioneer era of the U.S. - the Wild West theme.
5 - I loved Fallout 3 because it was open ended (but not enough for me - lol) and because of it being faithful to its 'post-apocalyptic' immersion. I would love to see the pioneer game (no name yet btw - needs a lot of studying) be immersive.
6 - I hate 'the sims' because it's so stupidly repetitive and brain numbing (like the teletubies ... AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHH) and boring. But I would love to see this RPG game explore real life in the Wild West - which would require research (I love to do historical research and develop LORE) and have the main character LIVE as such, without ever allowing it to become boring. So maybe have the player go and work for a smith, or work at a gun maker, go to a saloon, get drunk and have a brawl, play Texas Hold'em, open a grocery shop, defend a town against attackers, rob a bank, deliver mail between towns, own a town (by buying it one business at a time), dig for gold and silver or other minerals, own a mine, plant corn or wheat, raise cattle (and be a cowboy) and horses, have duels in the middle of the main road of town, do some line/square dancing and meet a girl, hunt, open a distillery and make whiskey, be a sheriff, be a U.S. Marshall, explore new land and start a new city, play a preacher, manage/own a bank, go lake fishing, trade with native Americans, drive a coach… etc
First Project(s):
- Pioneer theme
- simple 2d graphics (not hand painted)
- pre-designed areas
- leveling system/skill system
- economy system
- Simulate SOME elements of life in the Wild west
-The first project could simply be the combat section of the game alone (over the shoulder view of a showdown vs. enemy) for example.
Half-way goal:
- Full simulation of Wild West theme
- high quality painted 2d art
- very accurate weapons and clothing from the period
- voice acting
- Music
- realistic fluctuating economy based on offer and demand
End goal:
- Procedurally created game (Minecraft style)
- infinite gameplay
- game never stops creating new weapons, areas, enemies
- no cap leveling system or no cap skill system
- huge library of 2d art elements that can be procedurally recombined for infinite creation
- infinite map
- full musical score Hollywood style
